EX-RADFORD COACH HALL DIES AT 57

Paul Hall, one of the New River District's most successful baseball coaches in the 1960s and '70s, died Thursday at his home in Radford. He was 57.

Hall revived the Radford baseball program in 1963, his first year at the school, and won three consecutive district championships. He stepped down as coach in 1966, then returned to coach several fine squads in the early 1970s.

Hall also served as an eighth-grade football coach and an assistant basketball coach for the Bobcats. After leaving coaching, he was a high school umpire and basketball official until retiring in 1990.

A standout pitcher and point guard at Christiansburg High School in the late 1950s, Hall played college baseball at Ferrum and Milligan. He then went on to pitch in amateur leagues around the New River Valley for a number of years.

In other sports around the region:

\ SOCCER: Mark Decker and Gregg Adamo scored two goals to pace a balanced offensive attack as Blacksburg whipped fellow New River District member Radford 6-0 in the finals of the Region IV tournament in Blacksburg.

Blacksburg (15-0-2), which will make its sixth straight state tournament appearance by hosting Martinsville in the Group AA quarterfinals next Tuesday, got single goals from Jason Boyle and Kurt Williams in beating Radford (13-6) for the fourth time this season.

The Bobcats travel to Region III champion William Byrd for a first-round Group AA game Tuesday.

\ BASEBALL: In Hillsville, Denny Self finished what he started when he led Christiansburg to the New River District tournament championship Friday at Hillsville. Self began the afternoon by getting the decision in a 7-3 win over Radford in a game that was suspended on Wednesday, then he completed the day by smacking a home run to help the Blue Demons beat regular-season champ Carroll County 4-1 in the finals.

Self (5-4), who pitched five innings on Wednesday, returned Friday to pitch the seventh against Radford and finished with 12 strikeouts. Brock Keister hit a 3-run home run for the Blue Demons and Self added a triple and a double.

Byron Gates limited Carroll (16-4) to seven hits and he struck out seven, as Christiansburg (10-10) handed Cavalier sophomore Kevin Dalton (6-1) his first loss. Blake Hendricks had two hits and Gates homered for the Demons. Jason Kilbourne had a solo homer for the Cavaliers.

Both teams advance to Region IV play, with Carroll County hosting a semifinal game next Thursday and Christiansburg traveling to Tazewell on Tuesday.

Shannon Pyles drove home Bucky Burton with a two-out double in the bottom of the 11th inning to break up a classic pitchers' duel and give Giles a 2-1 win over Narrows in the semifinals of the Mountain Empire District tournament at Pulaski's Calfee Park.

Both pitchers - Mitch Reed for Giles and Jeff White for Narrows - went the distance. Reed (8-1) tossed a four-hitter and struck out 16.

Narrows (12-5) scored its run in the top of the seventh when Whitey Blankenship singled, advanced to second on an error, stole third and came home on a wild pitch. Giles (13-6) tied it in the bottom of the inning when Marty Smith reached on a throwing error that scored Billy Martin, who had doubled and advanced to third by tagging up on a flyball.

Bobby Cheeks pitched five innings of shutout ball and was 3-for-4 at the plate to help regular-season champion Grayson County (15-5) eliminate Shawsville 6-3 in the semifinals of the Mountain Empire District baseball tournament at Calfee Park.

Cheeks allowed two hits and struck out 10. The Blue Devils, who play Giles for the championship today at 7 p.m., led 6-0 before Ben Basham hit a three-run homer for Shawsville (12-6) in the top of the seventh.

It was not one of Jason Anderson's better outings, yet Glenvar's star left-hander persevered despite allowing 11 walks and hurling seven wild pitches in a 10-6 victory over host Covington in the Pioneer District tournament finals.

Anderson (8-1), who struck out 11, was staked to leads of 6-0 and 10-3. Eric East had three hits to pace a 13-hit attack for Glenvar (17-2-1) which plays Lebanon in a Region C tournament game Tuesday at Covington.

Covington (14-5-1), which plays the Mountain Empire's runner-up on Tuesday at home in Region C action, got two hits from Jeff Tucker and Jessie Snyder.
