ETC. AREA BASEBALL PLAYERS ON COLLEGE ALL-STATE TEAM

Washington and Lee's Graig Fantuzzi and Ferrum's Keith Mayhew have been named to the Virginia Sports Information Directors' College Division All-State baseball team.

Fantuzzi was selected as an outfielder and Mayhew as a pitcher. W&L's Bates Brown and Ferrum's Jimmy Hamilton and Chad Maddox were honorable-mention choices. team in Scoreboard, B4.)

Paul Hall, one of the New River District's most successful baseball coaches in the 1960s and '70s, died Thursday at his home in Radford. He was 57.

Hall revived the Radford baseball program in 1963, his first year at the school, and won three consecutive district championships. He stepped down as coach in 1966, then returned to coach several fine squads in the early 1970s.

Hall also served as an eighth-grade football coach and an assistant basketball coach for the Bobcats. After leaving coaching, he was a high school umpire and basketball official until retiring in 1990.

A standout pitcher and point guard at Christiansburg High School in the late 1950s, Hall played college baseball at Ferrum and Milligan.

A 100-lap Late Model Stock Car feature race headlines the Budweiser 200 tonight at New River Valley Speedway. Also on tap are 35 laps for the Limited Sportsman drivers, and 25 each for the Mod Mini, Mini and Pure Stock cars. Gates open at 2 p.m., with practice starting at 4. Qualifying is at 6:15 with the first race starting at 8 p.m.
