Area Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) congregations will observe Habitat Sunday June 5. The lot will be cleared June 11 in preparation for the official groundbreaking. Then work on the four-bedroom home will start in earnest. Construction is expected to wrap up Oct. 23.
Volunteers are being sought at all skill levels to form work groups. The churches are contributing the money to build the house and the volunteer labor. A donation from the Speer Fund to the Presbytery of the Peaks is being used to purchase the lot.
Cooperating congregations include churches in Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Dublin, Fairlawn Narrows, Belspring, Pearisburg, Pulaski and the Roanoke Valley.
Efforts to form a ROMAN CATHOLIC COMMUNITY in Christiansburg could lead to a new church there. "There's a good possibility of that, because neither the church in Radford or the one in Blacksburg feel they can successfully deal with all the Catholics who have moved into the area," said Elaine Reese, a Christiansburg resident who attends St. Mary's in Blacksburg.
Starting June 11, area clergy will celebrate Mass Saturdays at 7 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall on College Street (near Radford Road). Refreshments will follow the service.
Reese said the Catholic community would be a mission church of St. Mary's. The Christiansburg mission will be evaluated in August with an eye toward establishing a more permanent presence in Christiansburg. Call Ned Letto, 382-8046 or Reese, 381-1944.
