Ball, who resided in Princeton, N.J., checked into New York Hospital for tests and died Thursday, said his son John. The cause of death was not immediately determined. An autopsy was to be done.
Ball held the No. 2 and 3 positions in the State Department for nearly six years and later served a year as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations under Johnson.
