ROANOKE MAN ESCAPES FAILED ROBBERY

A Roanoke man was beaten by three people early Friday in an attempted robbery, police said.

Joseph F. Carlton told police that he fled from his attackers after they threatened to cut his finger off to remove his wedding band.

Carlton, 30, said he was punched and kicked about 1:47 a.m. on the 500 block of Orange Avenue. After he was hit on the head with what he thought was a bottle, the three assailants attempted to remove his ring, Carlton told police.

Carlton fled and was treated at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Arrested and charged with malicious wounding and attempted robbery were: Charles Michael Finney, 22, of Hunt Avenue; Tavon P. Wright, 21, of Liberty Road; and Jason Lamont Smith, 20, of Gandy Drive.
