GUITARIST SONNY SHARROCK DIES

Sonny Sharrock, 56, the guitarist whose bold, inventive improvisations influenced generations of jazz and jazz-fusion musicians, died Thursday.

He died of a heart attack at his home in Ossining, N.Y., on the day he was scheduled to leave for a European tour.

Sharrock was one of those artists whose work was often done away from the spotlight: He recorded primarily for small labels and toured the United States infrequently. His principal venue on the East Coast was New York's tiny Knitting Factory.
