ALLEGHANY HIRES COACH

Alleghany's lengthy search for a new boys' basketball coach to replace Jimmy Smith has come to an end with the naming of Carl Watson to the post.

Watson was the head coach at Davis & Elkins College in West Virginia for two years. He also coached at three high schools in that state.

More recently, Watson was the assistant at Group AA Warren County in Northern Virginia.

In other high school sports:

Grayson County battered Giles 16-0 in an anticlimactic championship game of the Mountain Empire District baseball tournament at Calfee Park in Pulaski. The regular-season champion Blue Devils had just nine hits but got plenty of assistance from the Spartans, who committed five errors, issued 14 bases on balls and hit two batters. The game was stopped after the top of the fifth inning because of the 10-run rule. Chad Shaffner (3-0) gained the victory with four innings of three-hit ball. Grayson (16-5) plays the Glenvar-Lebanon winner in the semifinals of the Region C tournament next Thursday at Covington.

Giles (13-7), which was coming off Friday's emotional 2-1 semifinal win over Narrows that gave the Spartans a regional berth, plays at Covington on Tuesday.

The Blue Devils advanced to the MED championship by beating Shawsville 6-3 on Friday.
