SO?!!

$100,000 - just think what you could do with that kind of money. It would buy quite a few temporary tatoos and more X-men than you would ever need. Why, you could buy a new bicycle for every day of the year and still have money leftover.

If you did have big bucks, you might want to invest it in something that paid you back, like stocks or bonds. That's what the pupils participating in the 1994 Spring Stock Market Game did. Of course, their money was pretend, but the lessons they learned about investing are sure to pay off in the future.

In the 10-week game, teams of pupils were given $100,000 in computer money to invest in stocks. The teams could buy, sell or trade stocks as they developed their skills in problem-solving, teamwork and analyzing.

Of the 216 teams playing through the Roanoke Times & World-News, three were recognized for finishing first in their respective areas. And the winners are . . .

Fleming-Ruffner Magnet School (Jeremy Baldwin, Graham Field, Aaron Lee, Brent Elliott and Jayme Sawyer, under the direction of Judith Painter); Galax Middle School (Adam Price, Austin Lineberry, Scott Lemons, Jacob Vaughn, Ricky Widner and Joey Lineberry, supervised by Charlene Matthews); and Shawsville Middle School (Joey Dalton, Megan Collins, Brandy Tuck, Deonna Heslep and Heather Hall, supervised by Marcia Murphy).

Members of the winning teams received Stock Market Game T-shirts. The class of the top team in the region, Fleming-Ruffner Magnet School, will honored at a pizza party.
