MORE BASEBALL, SOFTBALL TODAY

The Region III softball tournament gets under way today at the Moyer Complex in Salem with a rematch of last year's Group AA state semifinalists.

Salem takes on Rustburg in a first-round game and Magna Vista plays Amherst County in the other contest. Both games start at 5 p.m.

Last year, Rustburg, behind pitcher Katie Phillips, blanked Salem 5-0 in the Region III championship game and again 2-0 in the state semifinals. Phillips returns to oppose Salem's Ronda Rankin, who lost the state tournament game.

Also starting today are the Region C baseball and softball tournaments. In softball, at Castlewood, James River meets Lebanon at 2 p.m., and Castlewood takes on Glenvar at 4:30 p.m.

In baseball at Covington, defending Region C champion and Group A state runner-up Glenvar meets Lebanon at 4 p.m., and Covington tests Giles at 7 p.m. Semifinals in both baseball and softball are set for Thursday.
