CUNDIFF WINS 2, LAWHORN 1 IN HEAT RACES

It was a win-win situation for Rodney Cundiff at Franklin County Speedway on Monday night. Dudley Lawhorn was a winner, too.

In a special three-heat format of the Late Model Stock Car feature of the Taylor Select 300, Cundiff won twice, the first 50-lap race and the 25-lap finale. Cundiff has won seven races in Callaway this season.

Lawhorn, the points leader, won the 50-lap middle segment, his first victory since April 16. He finished third and second, respectively, in the other two races, however, earning 80 points for the night.

Cundiff, who pitted briefly in the second race and finished fifth, received 80 points. Lawhorn and Cundiff stand one-two in points.

Bobby Radford and Kenny Wagner turned in the next best overall performances in the Late Model endurance test. Radford, Saturday night's winner, finished sixth, second and third, and Wagner's placings were second, 10th and fifth. Salem's Dicky Wilson earned a fourth and a third but chose not enter the final heat.

Cundiff credited his performance to his crew.

"My car wasn't running right in that second segment," Cundiff said, "so we changed a couple of springs."

Lawhorn led the final heat for the first half, until Cundiff passed him.

"There just wasn't no more left on my tires," Lawhorn said. "A hundred laps is about all they'll do."

In other races, which counted as double points:

Steve Lam closed out a perfect May, winning his eighth Mini Stock race of the season. Jimmy Cox, fifth in points, was second, and Gary Joyce placed third.

After a restart on lap 18, Lonnie Foley overtook front-runner Phillip VanDerVeer and won his second FCS race of the weekend. Points leader Mike Dudley placed second, and VanDerVeer was third.

Pole-sitter Red Hartman won the Pure Stock division, jumping back into the points lead. Jay Peery and Kevin Ransom were second and third, respectively.

Chad Hodges was the Rookie winner. Points leader James Hunt was second, and Mike Roberts took third.
