GARTEN, Kenneth Ray Jr, 30, of Bassett, died Monday, May 30, 1994. Funeral 2 p.m. Thursday, Tomlinson-Bassett Funeral Home Chapel.

ALBERT, Roy P., 95, of Newport News and formerly of Elkton, died Saturday, May 28, 1994, at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News. He as born May 13, 1899, in Pulaski County and was the son of the late Iziah R. and Nannie Hufford Albert. Mr. Albert was an electrician with the Norfolk & Western Railroad and retired December 1, 1966. He is a member of Ashlar Masonic Lodge #125 A.F. & A.M. of Shenandoah and Luray Royal Arch Chapter #4. He lived most of his life in Shenandoah and Elkton and was an active member of the Elkton United Methodist Church. In 1987 he moved to the Tidewater area, living in Chesapeake and Newport News. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Gladys L. Albert, of Newport News.; three daughters, Bettie Albert White, of Newport News, Lois J. Huddle, of Chesapeake, Joyce Richardson, Palm Desert, Calif.; a son, Robert P. Albert, of Baton Rouge, La.; a sister, Lois R. Hall, of Pulaski; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted 10 a.m. Thursday from the Elkton United Methodist Church by the Rev. David Reynolds. Burial will be in Eastlawn Memorial Gardens near Harrisonburg. BURFORD, Leola Alexander, 99, of 1330 Mud Pike, Christiansburg, died Monday, May 30, 1994 at Montgomery Regional Hospital. She was born July 31, 1894 in Christiansburg, Va. She was retired from the Christiansburg and Richmond School systems, with 45 years service. She was a member of Schaeffer Memorial Baptist Church, a Girl Scout Leader, member of Chapter #80 Order of the Eastern Star, and New River Historical Society. She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Amy Burford, Richmond; granddaughters, Joyce (John) Wilson, Rich mond, Elizabeth Burford, Roanoke; one great-grandson; one great-granddaughter; and two great-great-granddaughters, all of Roanoke; nieces, Mrs. Piccola A. Dukes, Washington, D. C., Mrs. Louise C. Thompson and Mrs. Cloteal C. Curtis, both of Roanoke, Mrs. Lois C. Teele and Mrs. Helen A. Mills, both of Christiansburg; nephews, Mr. William Alexander, Washington, D. C., Leroy (Lucy) Alexander of Oklahoma, James (Lucille) Alexander of Ohio, Joseph A. Curtis, Roanoke; and a host of great-great-great-nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Schaeffer Memorial Baptist Church, with the Rev. L. E. Suggs Sr. officiating. GORDON, Walter Beverley, 96, of Wytheville, died Tuesday, May 31, 1994. He had been a resident of Asbury Retirement Community since it opened in July, 1987. He was born February 1, 1898 in Mecklenburg County, Va., the son of Charles S. and Rebecca Jane Park Gordon. He attended private and public schools near his home, and afterwards, came to V.P.I, finishing in the Class of 1921, with a major in Agriculture. During his early years at Tech, he was a member of the Corps, which was a part of the U. S. Army. For his service, he received an honorable discharge at the conclusion of World War I that provided membership in the American Legion Post #9. He was an ardent supporter and member of the Virginia Tech ``Old Guard"". In January 1926, Mr. Gordon entered into service with the Virginia Agriculture Extension and was county agent in Goochland County until 1931, when he affiliated with the Virginia Department of Corrections and moved into supervision of farming at the State Farm in Goochland County. In 1947, he be came Assistant Warden at the State Farm, and in 1955, he became Warden at the Bland Correctional Center in Bland County. He remained in this position until his retirement, November 30, 1964. At this time, he and his family moved to Wytheville for his retirement. Mr. Gordon was an active member of St. John's Episcopal Church, where he served as church Treasurer, a member of the Vestry for many years and as Senior Warden. Mr. Gordon was a 75 year Mason, having received his 60 year pin in 1980. He was a life member with membership in Wytheville Lodge #82 and served as Master of Bland Lodge #206, A.F. & A.M. He served as District Deputy Grand Master. He was also a member of Royal Arch Chapter #52. Two sons, Lt. Walter Beverley Gordon Jr. and Major Robert Copenhaver Gordon, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Eliza Copenhaver Gordon; one son and wife, Daniel Howe and Brenda Gordon, Blacksburg; one granddaughter, Beverly Anne Gordon, Roanoke; two grandsons, Richard Francis Gordon, Santa Monica, Calif., Christopher Howe Gordon, a student at the University of Virginia; one sister, Mrs. O. Leon (Rebecca) Seymour, Southern Pines, N. C. Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in St. John's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Laurie McAlpine officiating. Interment will follow in West End Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Barnett Funeral Home Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. The family suggests that those who prefer, may make memorials to St. John's Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, Wytheville, Va. Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville, Va. is in charge of arrangements.

HERBERT, Harry Delos, 84, died Saturday, May 29, 1994. A lifelong resident of Giles County, he was born on August 18, 1909 and was the son of the late Harry Elmer and Effie Mae Spangler Herbert. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Thompson Herbert and a brother, Rivers Herbert. He was a veteran of World War II. He is survived by two nephews, Jess Thomas Lester, Newport News, Va and Benjamin Donald Herbert, Winston, Or.; a niece, Dana Lee Price, Portland, Or; greatneices, Susan Lester Scott, Newport News, Va, Anna Irene Price, and Hadley Olivia Price, both of Portland, Or; 3 great-nephews, Thomas Michael Lester, Virginia Beach, Va, Jon Andrew Lester, Roanoke, Va. Benjamin Rivers Herbert, Winston, Or. Graveside rites will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the Fairview Cemetery, Narrows with Rev. Jack E. Musick officiating. HUNT, Helen Absher, 84, of Cowman Rd., Roanoke, went to be with the Lord, on Monday morning, May 30, 1994. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dock R. Hunt. She is survived by her sons and daughters, Robert (``Bob'') and Lori Hunt, Buchanan, Shirley and Bobbie Weaver, Mary Lee and Wesley Wilson, all of Roanoke, Kenneth W. Hunt, Alexandria, Jerry and Brenda Hunt, Roanoke, Melvin and Vickie Hunt, Wirtz; brothers and sisters, Frazier Absher, Lebanon, William (``Bill'') Absher, Blacksburg, Avery Absher, Washington State, Viola Shelton, Roanoke, Willie Hutton, New Castle, Fannie Spence, Blacksburg; dearly loved in-laws; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren. JAMES, JAMES H., (``Jim""), 80, of Salem, died Tuesday, May 31, 1994 at the Richfield Nursing Care in Salem, Va. He was born in Wythe County and was the son os the late Greek R. and Maggie Pierce James. He was a graduate of Emory & Henry College and was a retired field representative of Pet Milk Company. He was a member of the Abingdon United Methodist Church, a member of the Abingdon Civitan Club and the Abingdon Masonic Lodge. He was preceded in death by his wife, the late Mildred Fleenor James. Survivors include one son, James H. James Jr., Dublin; one daughter, Donna James Copenhaver, Salem; one sister, Helen J. Trigg, Radford; and four grandchildren. Funeral services for James H. (Jim) James will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Abingdon United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Henry Horton and the Rev. Dr. Larry J. Ousley officiating. Burial will follow in the Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be members of the Abingdon Civitan Club. JONES, William Defoe, 76, of Eagle Rock, died at his home early Tuesday morning, May 31, 1994. He was retired from the Lone Star Cement Corporation. He is survived by his wife, Susie Campbell Jones; five nieces, Mildred Johnson, Eagle Rock, Janit Rogers, Vinton, Janie Storch, Ohio, Mary Fries, Florida, Shirley Fisher, Goodview. He was preceded in death by a sister, Alice Teaford McCray. Funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Galatia Presbyterian Church, with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. KITTS, Estelle Corvin, 65, of Rt. 4, Wytheville, died Tuesday, May 31, 1994, in the Wythe County Community Hospital. She was the widow of Dulane F. Kitts. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Connie Kitts, Christiansburg; one sister, Dorothy Hoback, Wytheville; two brothers, Randolph Corvin, Wayne Corvin, both of Wytheville; one granddaughter, Leigh Ann Kitts; one stepgranddaughter, Hollie E. Weiss; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Thursday, June 2, 1994, at 12:00 noon in the Chapel of the Grubb Funeral Home conducted by the Rev. Dr. Thomas Sproule with the interment to follow in the Sunset Memory Gardens, Rural Retreat. LIVICK, Taylor Crawford, 27, of Salem, died in Lewis Gale Hospital, Salem on Monday, May 30, 1994. Mr. Livick was born November 24, 1966 in Staunton, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm H. Livick of Fort Defiance. He was a manger of Mac & Bob's Restaurant in Salem and a member of Augusta Stone Presbyterian Church. Surviving in addition to his parents, are a sister, Linda Lee Livick Hahn of Fort Defiance; 3 brothers, Malcolm H. Livick Jr., Grottoes; Charles R. Livick of Mechanicsville, Pa., and Capt. Todd S. Livick of Baumholder, Germany; his step-maternal grandmother, Virginia S. Wales of Fort Defianc 9 nieces and 2 nephews; and a special friend, Michelle Wrobel. MUTISPAUGH, Dorothy Donald Campbell,79, of Lexington, died Tuesday, May 31, 1994 in the Stonewall Jackson Hospital, Lexington. Mrs. Mutispaugh was born in Rockbridge Co., Va. on February 22, 1915, a daughter of the late Walter Ruff Donald and Nettie Smith Donald. She was a retired sales clerk for the Adair-Hutton Department Store in Lexington, and was a member of the Lexington Presbyterian Church. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Ann Campbell and Edward L. Mohler Sr., Lexington; three sisters, Mrs. Gladys Showalter and Mrs. Mae Durham, both of Lexington, Mrs. Marjorie Tenney, Staunton; one brother, Woodrow Walter Donald, Staun ton; eight grandchildren, Lou Anna Hassler, Edward L. Mohler Jr., Jeffery A. Mohler, and Deborah Ruley, all of Lexington, Bonnie Myers, Lynchburg, Lisa Perkins, Virginia Beach, Kimberly Maguire, Norfolk, and Teresa Ann Belcher, Alexandria; and 11 great-grandchildren. POWELL, Carl C., 79, of Rt. 1, Ferrum, died Tuesday, May 31, 1994, in the local hospital. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy and was a member of the American Legion Post #6. Mr. Powell was retired from Stanley Furniture Company and was a member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by a son, Lowell Powell and a brother, Wilson Powell. RAMSEY, Z. Beatrice, 83, of 219 Broad St., Martinsville, died Monday, May 30, 1994, at Memorial Hospital, Martinsville-Henry Co. She was born in Henry, Va. on March 27, 1911, a daughter of the late Everett Ramsey and the late Della Scott Ramsey. Miss Ramsey was retired as Manager of Cato's of Martinsville. She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Pearl Williams, Panama City, Fla., two brothers, Charlie H. Ramsey, Collinsville, Va., and Jesse S. Ramsey, Rocky Mount, Va.
