The Bucs scored twice in the top of the ninth to take a one-run lead, then proceeded to make two costly errors in the bottom of the inning that led to their 9-8 defeat to the Wilmington Blue Rocks in front of 4,579 spectators.
The Blue Rocks won for the eighth straight time when Larry Sutton and Raul Gonzalez delivered back-to-back RBI singles after reliever Marc Pisciotta and shortstop Ramon Zapata committed errors in the ninth. Pisciotta (1-4) gave up three hits and did not retire any of the five batters he faced.
Wilmington's rally made an unlikely winner out of John Downs (1-1), who surrendered Jason Kendall's two-run single in his two-thirds of an inning.
Kendall also knocked in two runs in a four-run second that gave Salem a 4-1 lead.
Jeff Conger's two-run homer in the sixth made it 6-3 Salem before Wilmington rallied for four runs in the seventh.\
