Army cook-off

DUBLIN - They're often dubbed "weekend warriors," but some members of the Dublin's Army Reserve unit, the 2nd Battalion, 318th Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 80th Division could also be called "classy cooks." They prepared a Salisbury steak entree, with seasoned green peas, home fried potatoes, three bean salad, bread, applesauce, coffee, iced tea and milk for the Best Food Service Operation in the Army Reserve competition.

In charge of operations for the contest were 1st Lt. John S. Phillips, food service officer; Sgt. 1st Class Michael H. Watson, food service sergeant; SFC Harold R. Boyd, assistant food service sergeant; and SFC Darlene L. Kontz, battalion supply sergeant.

The group was one of five regional winners across the country to compete for the Army's top culinary honor. Commander of the 2nd Battalion, Raymon C. Mason, Jr., said "at this level of competition, it's more than cooking, it's minute details."

The soldiers were judged on effective menu adjustment and nutrition initiatives, knowledge of operational procedures, food and energy cost control, transportation, storage and preventive maintenance checks of all field kitchen equipment.

The entire exercise took place at an old stone quarry at Radford Army Ammunition Plant and was conducted under tactical conditions, the Army's term for combat situations. Food service officer Phillips stated that "problems in food handling and preparation can diminish a unit's ability to meet its mission just as much as enemy action."

Winners in the national Army cook-off will be announced in June.

Hospitality department

BLACKSBURG - The Department of Hotel Restaurant and Institutional Management at Virginia Tech has changed its name to the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management to better reflect changes in the industry. The Donaldson Brown Hotel and Conference Center has been integrated into the new department and will be helpful in the expanded emphasis on hospitality and tourism management.

The hospitality management doctoral program has been ranked first of 12 in the country in a recent issue of the Cornell Hotel and Restaurant Administration Quarterly. The master's degree program was listed as fourth out of 26 comparable programs, and the bachelor's degree program was 11th out of 142.

Radford Rotary raffle

RADFORD - The Radford Rotary Club plans to raffle a $1,200 diamond-sapphire ring and other prizes to support its Polio Plus campaign, which provides polio vaccine and physicians to underdeveloped countries.

Several gift certificates also will be given away.

Tickets for the drawing - to be held July 4 in Bisset Park - are available from Rotary Club members. The drawing will be aired on WRAD (1460 AM) and WRIQ (101.7 FM).

Delay for survey

PULASKI - Motorists traveling to and from Pulaski might be delayed briefly during early June to take part in a Virginia Department of Transportation survey. VDOT transportation planners will conduct origin/destination surveys on major routes that cross Pulaski's corporate limits.

Cars will be stopped at clearly-marked locations. Drivers will be asked where they began, their destination and their trip's purpose.

Each survey will take less than a minute.

The survey data will help VDOT to determine future transportation needs and to plan future projects.

Survey teams will work from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. during the survey period, which will last about three weeks.

In addition to stopping motorists, surveyors will record license numbers of passing vehicles in some locations and mail surveys to the addresses where those vehicles are registered. Surveys also will be sent to every household in Pulaski asking about the types of vehicle trips made by household members. Information requested will be kept confidential.

For more information, call Laura Bullock, 387-5493.
