The program, Prom Promise, is sponsored by Nationwide Insurance Co.
All 888 Lord Botetourt students took the anti-drug pledge, but the school finished one point behind Indian River High School in Tidewater.
The competition is judged not only on the number of people participating, but also on a scrapbook which reflects the prom experience.
Richard Pauley, a Daleville agent for Nationwide, said 1994 was the fourth straight year in which Lord Botetourt students had no accidents on prom night. The school has finished No.1 in the region those four years.
Pauley, who sponsored Lord Botetourt in conjunction with fellow agent John Osborne, said the student participation shows the positive side of teen-agers.
"I think we are real quick to pounce on something negative," he said. "I think we are looking here at something positive."
Lord Botetourt students will be rewarded for their effort with a 2-liter soft drink and a coupon for a free order of french fries.
The school will be given $2,500 from various sponsors to spend as it sees fit. With last year's money, the school installed a salad bar in the cafeteria, Pauley said.
