DEFENSEMAN JOINS EXPRESS THROUGH DRAFT

The Roanoke Express selected defenseman Jeff Sabastien in Tuesday's East Coast Hockey League player dispersal draft of the Louisville IceHawks, who announced last week that they were suspending operations for the 1994-95 season.

Roanoke coach Frank Anzalone and general manager Pierre Paiement chose Sebastien with the eighth pick.

Sebastien, a native of Regina, Saskatchewan, had 30 points (11 goals, 19 assists) in 66 games for Louisville last season.

Louisville's Trevor Buchanan was selected first in the draft by Huntington. The Blizzard had first pick because of its ECHL-worst record in '93-94.

The IceHawks' all-time leading scorer, forward Sheldon Gorski, was chosen fourth by Erie.

Louisville owner Horn Chen opted to suspend operations for '94-95 rather than pay for refurbishing of the club's home Broadbent Arena. Chen is considering relocating the franchise for '95-96, possibly to Daytona Beach, Fla.

Milam averaged two points per game in 23 games last season as a sophomore for the Keydets. He averaged 5.7 minutes per game and made one start.

VMI coach Bart Bellairs said Tuesday that he filled the extra scholarship by signing 6-3 guard Bryan Taueg out of Pike High School in Indianapolis.
