BAUMGARDNER, Lacy Painter, 86, of Roanoke, Va., passed away Tuesday, May 31, 1994, in a local hospital. Lacy was born in Rural Retreat, Virginia. He moved to New York City to begin an acting career, and after serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II, he was employed by the New York Bank for Savings, from where he retired as assistant vice president. After retirement, Lacy moved to Roanoke to be close to his family. Lacy was a man who loved life and savored every minute of it. He deeply appreciated the beauty of God's created work, and had a particular love for animals. He had a host of friends and treasured each one of them. His feelings about friendship were reflected in his favorite quote from Charles Dickens, ""No way of life is either true or rewarding that leaves out man's need of loving and of being loved"". Lacy was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Roanoke, having joined in the early 1970's. He was an active member of the church's choir for seniors, The Heritage Singers, and was a beloved member of the Bible Survey Class. He twice served as president of these two groups. He also served as an usher and greeter for the church. Lacy was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. G. E. Baumgardner; and a sister, Mrs. Louise B. Hobbie. He is survived by a brother and a sister-in-law, Mr. William R. and Dorothy M. Baumgardner; one nephew, Mr. William R. Baumgardner, Jr., and his wife, Judy, all of Roanoke; two nieces, Mrs. William Y. (Patricia G.) Quarles, Jr., of Greenville, S.C. and Mrs. Keith D. (Mary B.) Yeargan, of Roanoke; two great-nephews and three great-nieces. He is also survived by a very dear friend, Mrs. Marion Q. Chase, of Roanoke. Dr. Charles G. Fuller, pastor, and Doyal V. Spence, minister of music, will conduct a funeral service at First Baptist Church, in the former sanctuary, 515 3rd St., S.W., in downtown Roanoke, on Friday, June 3, 1994, at 11 a.m. Following this, there will be a graveside service at 2:30 p.m. in Mountain View Cemetery in Rural Retreat, Va. Friends may visit with the family at Oakey's Main Chapel, Church Ave., downtown Roanoke, on Thursday, June 2, 1994, from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Deacons Fellowship Fund of First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 2799, Roanoke, VA 24001, or the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 554, Roanoke, VA 24003-0554.

BELCHER, Fannie H., 95, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, May 31, 1994. Survivors: three daughters, Mrs. Crystal Fields, and Eleanor Haskins, both of Roanoke, Mrs. Estella (Samuel) Farmer, of Bloomfield, Conn. Eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 3, 1994, at 11 a.m. at the Hamlar Curtis Chapel. Mr. Journette and Mr. Henderson will officiate with burial in Fairview Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday an half hour prior to service.

BRINK, Irwin M., 79, of Moneta, died Wednesday, May 25, 1994, at his daughter's home in Elizabeth, Colo. Memorial services held Saturday, June 25, 1994, at 9 a.m. at Asbury Methodist Church, Scranton, Pa. He is survived by his daughter, Catherine M. Parks; two granddaughters, Elizabeth A. Leonard, Deanna Roesinger; and two great-grandchildren, Eric and Jessica. In lieu of flowers, family will combine donations to establish a memorial at the Oncology Unit at the Salem VA Medical Center.

DOSS, Elsie ""Dumpy"" Allman, 80, of Glade Hill, died Tuesday, May 31, 1994, in Franklin Memorial Hospital, Rocky Mount, Va. She was the daughter of the late John Issac and Elsie Jefferson Allman; wife of the late Howard Hodges Doss. Surviving are one sister, Bernic Ratcliffe, Glade Hill, Va.; one brother, Noel W. FLOOD, Kanawha Belle, 90, of Roanoke, died Monday, May 30, 1994. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Laura J. Noland, Roanoke; two granddaughters, Mrs. Melcina Freeman, Roanoke, Dr. Ramona L. GAULDIN, Ainslee Riane, 18 months, of Rt. 1 Callaway, died Wednesday, June 1, 1994, in a Roanoke hospital. Surviving are her parents, William H. (Billy) Jr and Susan Gauldin, Callaway; her sister, Maleena Gauldin, Callaway; her grandparents, Frances Morris, Charlottesville; Sue Gauldin, Axton; William H. GLADDEN, Julius Grant, 71, of Salem, died Wednesday, June 1, 1994, in Lewis-Gale Hospital. He was an engineer with Norfolk & Southern Railroad and retired in 1975. He was a life long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints; also an Army WWII veteran serving in the European Theater. In recent years, he enjoyed visiting and sharing time with many of the residence of Richfield Nursing Center. Survivors include his wife, Alice Baker Gladden; three sons, Andrew Baker Gladden, John Timothy Gladden, Kelley Grant Gladden; daughter, Deborah Lynn Gladden; granddaughter, Carrie Alice Gladden; a brother and sister-in-law, James Clayton and Marvel Gladden all of Salem; three sisters and brothers-in, Emma Clowers, Salem, Mary and Robert Ralstin, Tirgard, Oreg., Wilma G. and Jarrett Vandergrift of Salem; sister-in-law, Martha A. Gladden of Salem; many neices and nephews. HALL, Maeda Basham, 85, of Rt 3 Box 170 Floyd, Va., died Tuesday, May 31, 1994. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Lee Hall. Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Rev. HARDIN, Hilah McCormick, 69, of Alexandria, Va., formerly of Rockbridge Co., died Tuesday, May 31, 1994, in Mt. Vernon Hospital. Born in Rockbridge Co., Va., she was the daughter of the late Arthur G. McCormick and Norah Palmer McCormick. She was a member of Groveton Baptist Church, of Alexandria, retired government worker and wedding shop owner. Surviving are her husband of forty-six years, Robert Loyd Hardin, Alexandria; two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Castles, Alexandria, Rebecca Arlene Bender, Ormond Beach, Fla.; three grandchildren, Ricky T. Castles, Alexandria, Diana Christine Bender, Ormond Beach, Fla., and Kelly Marie Bender, Ormond Beach, Fla. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, June 3, 1994, from the Harrison Funeral Chapel, at 2 p.m, with burial to follow in Stonewall Jackson Cemetery. HINTY, Samuel Harvey, 75, of Lexington, Va. died Tuesday, May 31, 1994, in the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville. Mr. Hinty was born in Rockbridge Co. on September 19, 1918, a son of the late William howard and Goldie Moore Hinty. He was a member of the Broad Creek A.R.P. Church in Natural Bridge, and was a retired weaver for Burlington Industries. Mr. Hinty was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Elizabeth Hinty. Surviving are a daughter, Linda Swisher, Fishersville; three sisters, Mae Hinty, Natural Bridge, Alene Smith, Natural Bridge, Ruby McDaniel, Natural Bridge; two granddaughters, Tara Katherine Elizabeth Swisher, Fisherville, Melinda Renee Swisher, Fishersville; three special nieces, Robin Jenkins, Natural Bridge, Penny Dudley, Natural Bridge, Joyce McFadding, Glasgow; one nephew, Billy Ray Smith, Natural Bridge; one great nephew, Jacob Dudley. Graveside services will be conducted Friday, June 3,1994, at 11 a.m. at the Rockbridge Memorial Gardens, Lexington with the Rev. Roy Swisher officiating. The family will receive friends at the home. HOPKINS, Annadawn Edwards Dr., 63, of Ajijic, Mexico, died Tuesday, May 10, 1994, at her home of heart failure. Dr. Hopkins was born in Monroe, La. and lived in Blacksburg for several years. She received her Bachelor's degree from Bessie Tift College; her masters from Loyola University and completed her doctorate at Seattle University. Dr. Hopkins taught business at the then Radford College and was recognized in Who's Who in America for her contributions to education. She was a member of the DAR and many professional organizations. A memorial service was held in Ajijic, Mexico on May 14. Dr. Hopkins is survived by her former husband, James W. Hopkins of Seattle, Wa.; two daughters, Dawn H. Laughlin of Metairie, La. and Rainbow-Lyn H. Shearon of Sumner, Wa. and two grandsons, Wesley E. Warner and Shane C. Warner both of Blacksburg, Va. A memorial service will be held in Seattle on Saturday, June 4, 1994, at 1 p.m. at Lake City Church, 1933 N.E. 125th St.

KEATON, Curtis Eugene, 52, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, May 31, 1994, at his home. He was born August 31, 1941, in Kimball, W.Va. The son of Mrs. Emma Wade Keaton and Mr. James Arthur Keaton who proceded him in death. He is survived by three sons, Curtis E. Keaton, Jr., Troy Anderson, and Gerald Welch; three sisters, Mrs. Josephine Keaton Eural, Mrs. Maggie (James) Mims, of Cleveland, Ohio, Mrs. Kate Echols, St. Louis, Mo.; two brothers, Mr. James Keaton, Forestville, Md., and Rev. SULLIVAN, Carl Leon, (``Googie""), 70, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, May 31, 1994 in a local hospital. Surviving are his wife, Mary Sullivan; step-grandson and wife, Shane and Sue Moses, Washington, D.C.; his mother, Carrie Hazel Palmer, Roanoke; three sisters, Mildred Garlick, June Hudgins, Juanita Snead, all of Roanoke, and two special friends, Aubrey Dudley, Roanoke and Lee Frazier, New Castle. TRIBBETT, James G., 85, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, June 1, 1994. He had been employed at American Viscose Co. and was a retired carpenter from Hodges Lumber Co. He was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Altice. He is survived by his wife, Eula Spencer Tribbett; three sons and daughters-in-law, George and Margaret Tribbett, Tommy and Janet Tribbett, Freddie and Bonnie Tribbett; one daughter and son-in-law, Marie and William Hall, all of Blue Ridge; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Deaner Tribbett, Roanoke, Judson Tribbett, Mount Pleasant; two sisters, Cornelia Foley of Smith Mtn. Lake, and Elizabeth May Tribbett of Roanoke; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday, June 3, 1994 , at Oakey's North Chapel with the Rev. M. Dennis Herman and the Rev. James V. DeFoe officiating. Interment will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

VASS, Rodney Thomas, 60, of Covington, died Wednesday, June 1, 1994. He was born April 18, 1934 in Craig County, son of the late Jack and Blanche Loan Vass. He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Stacy Vass in 1991. Mr. Vass served in the US Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the Covington Lodge #610 Loyal Order of the Moose, where he served as a trustee and was named the Covington Lodge #610 Member of the Year for 1993. He was also a member of the Blue Ridge Legion #82 of the Loyal Order of the Moose. He is survived by his son, Rodney T. Vass Jr, Roanoke; a grandson, Rodney T. Vass III, Roanoke; four sisters, Mrs. Ed (Cathern) Smith, Mrs. Bill (Helen) Carter, Mrs. Charles (Jean) Elmore, all of Covington, and Mrs. Gene (Darlene) Smith, Richmond. Funeral will be held Friday at 4 p.m. from the Arritt Funeral Home Chapel, Covington. Inter ment will follow in the Huffman Memorial Cemetery, New Castle.
