STAGE SET FOR GROUP AA TENNIS TOURNEY

Two hard-playing sophomores seeking the state singles title will be featured this morning in Group AA girls' tennis tournament, and Marion will take on Osbourn for the team championship.

In the individual singles final at 9 a.m. at Radford University's Dedmon Center, Region III champion Jill Archer of Salem seeks to dethrone defending champion Megan Romine of Region II Courtland.

Archer defeated Sowmya Iyer of Region I Tabb 0-6, 6-3, 6-4, and Romine defeated Cathy Richardson of Region IV Radford 6-1, 6-0 in the semifinals.

At approximately 11 a.m., Archer is scheduled to team with Betsy Hall in the individual doubles championship against Richardson and Ashleigh Funk of Radford.

Cherie Quesenberry and Emily Edwards of Floyd County were eliminated from the individual doubles competition at the Group A girls' state tennis tournament in Wise. Stonewall Jackson's team of Kristen Hughes and Tanja Locher defeated Quesenberry and Edwards 6-0, 6-0.

In Covington, Giles held off Covington and advanced to today's semifinals of the Region C baseball tournament at 7 p.m. The Spartans beat the Cougars 7-6 and will face Castlewood in the second semifinal after Glenvar battles Grayson County at 4 p.m.
