FDA APPROVES NEW MEDICATION FOR TB

The Food and Drug Administration approved a new three-in-one tuberculosis pill Wednesday in an effort to fight the increasingly drug-resistant disease.

Rifater, developed by Marion Merrell Dow Inc., combines the world's top TB drugs - rifampin, isoniazid and pyrazinamide - making it easier for patients to take their medicine as prescribed.

"That sounds sort of simple but it's really very important because ...TB becomes drug resistant when patients don't take their medicine properly," said American Lung Association President Dr. Joseph Bates.
