IN SCHOOL

THREE LYNCHBURG COLLEGE STUDENTS - Angela Jefferson, Christopher Boyd and Kathryn Franke - from the Roanoke Valley recently participated in the Anderson Leadership Conference, a weekend conference to foster students' leadership skills.

Jefferson, daughter of Roger and Linda Jefferson of Roanoke, is a Lynchburg College freshman and a 1993 graduate of Cave Spring High School.

Boyd, son of Dianne Boyd of Roanoke, and Franke, daughter of Walter and Bernice Franke of Salem, also were selected to serve on the college's Student Government Association.

Rising senior Franke, a communications major, was elected president of the SGA. Boyd, a rising sophomore studying journalism, was chosen as the sophomore class vice president.

\ ROBERT SHELTON and RAYMOND KACZMAREK have been named officers in the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets.

Shelton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert L. Selton of Roanoke, will be a Corps company commander and will hold the rank of cadet major. An environmental science major, Shelton will be responsible for the training and welfare of 50 cadets.

Kaczmarek, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Kaczmarek of Roanoke, will hold the rank of cadet lieutenant colonel. As a Corps deputy commander, Kaczmarek will be responsible for 200 cadets entering the Corps next fall. He is studying biology and will graduate in May 1996.

\ THE HOLLINS COLLEGE chapter of Phi Beta Kappa recently named students Sherri L. Fialko, Ginny Christophel Davis and Bethany Leigh Blankenship to their organization.

In order to be initiated, students must demonstrate good character and show strong performance in various liberal arts studies.

\ VIRGINIA'S EXPLORE PARK recently announced the winners in its Earth Day celebration art and prose contest.

Prose and poetry winners included:

Fifth grade - Cory Jones, first place; Jenny Goodlatte, second place; Angela Marshall, third; Erin Edwards, honorable mention.

Fourth grade - Travis Ramsey, first; Matt Wallace, second; Brandi Basham, third; Amy Rhodes, honorable mention; Hadley Adkin, honorable mention.

\ PATRICK HENRY and WILLIAM FLEMING HIGH SCHOOL students recently won awards at the the\ Regional Future Business Leaders Of America competition at Virginia Western Community College.

Winners from Patrick Henry High School were: Lisa Sowers, Daniel Daum and Michelle Eanes, first place; Taharee Webb, Emily Clasbey, Lori Clasbey, Chris Avidano and Heather Cormany, second place; Heather Cormany, third place; and Jo Doe and Charlena Stanley, fourth place.

Winners from William Fleming High School were: Jeremy Barnes and Vilavone Phonasa, first.

Fleming also won an award for having the longest running chapter membership in the region.

\ A GLENVAR HIGH SCHOOL four-member team recently won second place at the Virginia Regional Computer Science competition at Virginia Tech.

Seniors Adam Ashwell, Chadd Yeatts, Mark Greer and Chad Pack competed against several other Southwest Virginia teams to solve eight computer problems in under three hours. The team, advised by Glenvar teacher Bo Hagen, also received $300 in U.S. savings bonds.

\ THE FINCASTLE RESOLUTIONS CHAPTER OF THE SONS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION has announced the winners of its annual essay contest. The chapter awards $50 and $100 savings bonds for essays about the the 1774 Battle of Point Pleasant.

The winners are - Laura N. Scyphers, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David L. Scyphers of 1031 Liberty Road and Rienne Jones, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Duke Morris of 2607 Derwent Drive; both from William Fleming High School.

\ KELLY DIERKER, daughter of Richard and Judy Dierker of Roanoke, has been named an admissions office tour guide for the 1994-95 academic year at Pfeiffer College in Misenheimer, N.C.

Dierker is a freshman at the college.

\ KATRINA LEIGH WHITE, daughter of Frank and Sharon White of Roanoke, has been named to the first semester dean's list at Hollins College.

White, a junior, is a graduate of Greenbrier East High School, Lewisburg, W.Va.

\ JAMES MORTON TURNER III, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Turner Jr. of 2405 Wycliffe Ave., has been elected into membership in the Gamma of Virginia chapter of Phi Beta Kappa at Washington and Lee University.

Turner is a junior at the college.

\ NATIONAL BUSINESS COLLEGE has announced the names of Roanoke Valley residents named to its dean's list for the winter quarter at the Roanoke Valley campus.

\ ROANOKE-AREA STUDENTS who won first place in the Junior American Citizens "Flags in American History" contest are: Tiffany Wortman and Philip Wall, both of Roanoke Catholic Lower School; and David Durham, Lindsay Hock and Matt McDowell, all of Crystal Spring Elementary School.

The students are all fourth-graders.

The entries reflect an interest in the history and heritage of the United States, the central theme of the Junior American Citizens, a committee of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.

The winners were sponsored by the Col. William Preston Chapter, and received pins and certificates. Their entries have been forwarded for judging at division and national levels.

\ KAREN DOOLAN, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John P. Doolan Jr. of Roanoke, has been selected by Campbell University to appear in the 1994 edition of Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.

Doolan is serving as vice president for the Academy of Students of Pharmacy and is a member of the North Carolina Pharmaceutical Association. She is a graduate of Cave Spring High School.

\ AMY ELIZABETH LINDAMOOD, daughter of Robert E. and Anita D. Lindamood of Roanoke, is one of four dancers from Hollins College chosen to perform at the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in Washington D.C.

Lindamood is a sophomore and a graduate of Patrick Henry High School.

\ MICHAEL SHAWN MCFADDEN, son of Michael F. and Joyce Ann McFadden of Morning Dove Lane, is one of eight cadets at Virginia Military Institute chosen to attend the 1994 Virginia Program at Oxford.

The six-week program will concentrate on literature, history and society of late 16th and early 17th century England.

McFadden is a sophomore civil engineering major.

\ MARY FITZGERALD, assistant professor of art history at Roanoke College, has been chosen to participate in a National Endowment for the Humanities 1994 Summer Seminar for College Teachers at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn.

Fitzgerald, as one of 12 scholars, will receive a $3,200 stipend. The seminar is entitled, "Constructing the Image of the State, the Family and the Individual in Renaissance Florence and Venice."

Before joining the Roanoke College faculty, Fitzgerald taught at Syracuse University, Ithaca College, Ohio University, Colgate University and Wright State University. She received her Ph.D. in the history of Italian art from Syracuse University.

\ ROLAND MINTON and JEFFREY SPIELMAN, of Roanoke College, have received a $28,643 grant from the Virginia Council of Higher Education to fund a second Roanoke Mathematics Institute.

The institute will offer workshops in both calculus and data analysis in order to address current educational reform issues.

Minton, associate professor of mathematics, joined the Roanoke College faculty in 1986 after holding a similar position at Virginia Tech. Spielman, professor of mathematics, also joined the faculty in 1986 after teaching at Chicago State University and Ohio Northern University.

\ NATIONAL BUSINESS COLLEGE announced the names of Roanoke Valley students who graduated after the winter term. They are:
