Originally a human service project of St. Philip Church, the drive has grown to involve a wide cross section of the community, according to Barbara Scaffidi, donor consultant of the American Red Cross staff. Church members who have signed up to donate come from North Roanoke County, the Williamson Road area of Roanoke City and Botetourt County.
Recruitment started last month with two St. Philip members, Margaret Mitchell and Helen Miller. They invited members of other churches to join and received favorable responses from a majority in the community, Mitchell said. The goal of 50 pints was raised to 80.
Participating are members of St. Philip, St. Paul, Trinity, Wheatland and Glade Creek Lutheran churches, Green Ridge and Westminster Presbyterian, North Roanoke, Daleville, Enon and First Baptist of Hollins, Southview, Northview and St. Mark's United Methodist and Faith Alliance Church.
