A gourmet picnic lunch will be served on the lawn at the LOA Area Agency on Aging's main office at 706 Campbell Ave. S.W. Lunch will be available from 11:30 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Tickets are $10, and each ticket provides a week of hot meals delivered to the home of a frail elderly person.
C. Ivor Brown, a violinist with the Roanoke Symphony, and Howard Nash, who performs magic tricks with balloons, will provide entertainment during the lunch.
Regional group honors several for services
Blue Ridge Community Services recently honored three Roanokers and one organization for their services to the Roanoke Valley community.
Harriet Shivers, a Roanoke attorney, received the 1994 Mental Health Award. She is president of the Virginia Guardianship Association and founding board member of On Our Own of Roanoke Inc., a drop-in center for and managed by persons with mental illness.
Charlesetta Paschal and the Down's Syndrome Association of Roanoke received the 1994 Sunshine Award. Paschal has been partner to a mentally retarded woman through the Bridge Builder Program of Blue Ridge Community Services. The association has been a generous contributor of funds to mentally retarded adults learning to live independently.
John Rauck, chief probation and parole officer with the Virginia Department of Corrections, received the 1994 Substance Abuse Award. He has worked closely with Community Services staff in the development and maintenance of the Intensive Outpatient Program.
Salvation Army to start day camp on June 20
The Salvation Army is now registering children age 6 to 12 years old for its' Christian Summer Day Camp.
Camp will be held Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., from June 20 through August 12.
Parents or guardians may register children at the community center at 724 Dale Ave., S.E. through May 31. Weekly fees are $45 per child, and $35 each additional child provided there are more than three registered from one family. The registration fee is $20 per child. All fees are due June 17.
Transportation must be provided, and children must bring their own lunches. Cold drinks and refreshments will be furnished.
