Talent revue to raise money for scholarships

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. will present a talent revue, "As Long As We Can Dream," at Virginia Western Community College Saturday at 7 p.m.

The participants are: Jacqueline Vines, grade three, and Mar'Quita Hairston, grade four, Monterey Elementary School; Monica Campbell, grade three, East Salem Elementary School; Alani Price, grade six, Addison Junior High; Michael Phillips, grade seven, James Madison Middle School; and Naima Scott, grade 12, William Fleming High School.

Tickets cost $10 for adults and $5 for those 18 and under. They may be purchased from sorority members or at the door.

Beta Chi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is a service organization which sponsors many activities that benefit the youth, the elderly and others in the community. The proceeds from the revue will be used for the Alpha Kappa Alpha Scholarship Fund.

Wasena to host open house before closing

Wasena Elementary School in Roanoke will have its annual family barbecue on June 4. The entire Wasena neighborhood, plus everyone who has been involved with the school, is invited.

The barbecue and a schoolwide open house begin at 5 p.m. The evening will include a program of memories about the neighborhood and the history of the school, as well as performances from this year's students.

Wasena School opened in 1928 and was last renovated in 1950. The school will be closed for renovation next year.

Adult Education needs teaching volunteers

The Adult Education Program, operated by Blue Ridge Community Services, is seeking volunteer teachers to instruct mentally retarded adults.

Classes are offered in areas related to daily living skills, academics and the arts.

The summer semester will begin June 21 and will meet for five consecutive Tuesdays. Classes are held at the Virginia Western Community College campus from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.
