Annual tennis clinic will be held June 11

The 1994 "Yes to Tennis, No to Drugs" tennis clinic will be held June 11 at River's Edge Park.

The clinic, which is open to children ages 8 to 18, will begin at 10 a.m. with a presentation from a Roanoke Police D.A.R.E. officer. Two hours of free tennis lessons from local volunteers and professionals will follow the presentation.

Participants will be eligible to win prize drawings, including a grand prize drawing for a one week tennis scholarship at the Van Der Meer Tennis Center at Hilton Head Island, S.C.

To register, call 772-4408. Space is limited to the first 72 people.

Check-in will be begin at 8:30 a.m. in the gazebo at River's Edge tennis courts. Parents must sign release forms for their children.

In the event of rain, the clinic will be held at Countryside Tennis Complex.

Southwest Soccer club registering players

The Southwest County Soccer Club is registering players for 1994.

All players, new or returning, must register and pay fees by Saturday. Forms are available at the Roanoke County Public Library on Virginia 419.

Players must be at least 6 years old on or before Jan. 1, 1995, and not 18 on or before Oct. 1, 1994.

Practices begin the week of Aug. 1.

Youths may register for tennis in Roanoke

Roanoke City Parks and Recreation is registering students for beginner tennis lessons, junior team tennis and junior Davis/Wightman Cup tennis.

Beginner lessons will be conducted at various sites in the city for ages 7 through 17. Lessons will consist of two 90 minute sessions per week for six weeks, beginning June 20. The fee is $15.

Junior team tennis, for players who can serve, keep score and keep the ball in play, lasts six weeks, begining July 5. The fee is $15, and includes a T-shirt.

Davis-Wightman Cup tennis is a more intensive program for ages 12-18. It consists of daily two-hour sessions for four weeks, beginning June 20. The fee is $70.

Registration forms are available at the Parks and Recreation main office, and must be returned by June 10.
