It wasn't enough, however, as the Hokies finished in a tie for 19th place with Houston and missed the cut by eight strokes.
Tech fired five birdies and an eagle on the last six holes of the day. Freshman David Havens carded the eagle on the 16th hole, and sophomore Sean Farrell birdied holes 13, 14 and 15.
Havens was the top finisher for the Hokies with an even-par 72 and a two-day total of 145, putting him in a tie for 44th place. Farrell shot a 69 and finished in a tie for 57th place with 146. Brian Sharp shot a 73 to finish with 147, Curtis Deal carded a 74 and a 151 and Matt Martin fired a 79 to finish at 156.
Stanford leads the team standings at 565 after shooting a 15-under 273 on the second day. Arkansas is two strokes back at 567.
Stanford's Notah Begay and Georgia Tech's Mikko Rantanen broke the course record with scores of 62 and 63, respectively. Both players are tied atop the leaderboard.

Virginia's Brian Buchanan, a first-round draft pick Thursday by the New York Yankees, has been named first-team All-American by Baseball America magazine. Buchanan, junior who played the outfield and first base this year for the Cavaliers, was chosen as a designated hitter after batting .396 with 22 home runs and 66 RBI. He is the first UVa player to make Baseball America's first team.
In Boise, Idaho, Virginia's Rob Cook finished third in his heat of the 3,000-meter steeplechase Thursday at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Cook, who has this year's top U.S. collegiate time of 8 minutes, 39.36 seconds, was clocked in 8:58.78. He advances to the final tonight at Boise State's Bronco Stadium.
In the women's events, UVa's Sharon Servidio finished 13th in the women's 10,000 meters (35:37.54).
Seven Virginia players have been named to the U.S. Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association's All-America teams.
The Cavaliers did not have a first-team selection, but Tim Whiteley, a sophomore midfielder, and Craig Ronald, a senior defenseman, were named to the second team. The third team featured UVa's Michael Watson, a freshman attackman, and Greg Traynor, a junior midfielder. Honorable-mention selections from Virginia were David Jones, a junior midfielder; Matt Crisp, a senior defenseman; and James Ireland, a senior goalie.
In Buchanan, freshman Sara Mundy (14-2) pitched a three-hit shutout to lead James River to a 9-0 victory over Floyd County in a semifinal of the Region C high school softball tournament. The victory propels the Knights into next week's Group A tournament.
Tiffany Cox was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and three RBI for James River (18-4), which plays Glenvar for the regional championship at Salem's Moyer Complex at 4:30 p.m. today.
