SPECIAL OLYMPICS AWARDS PRESENTED AT PULASKI COUNTY HIGH

The first Special Olympics letters awarded in Virginia have gone to a group of students at Pulaski County High School.

The letters went to Timmy Freeman, Tommy Rice, Dale Ratclift, Jennifer Oliver, Mary Manual, Gerald Kidd, William Farley, Michael Jones, Benny Holcomb, Sheryl Desrochers, Dean Burton, Kendle Arnold, Crystal Arnold and Aaron Reed.

Some of them were also recognized for citizenship and helper awards.

Kelly Dalton Service Awards, named for a wheelchair-bound Pulaski County High School student who died several years ago, were awarded to students Jennifer Olivier, Tommy Rice and Gerald Kidd; school aides Eric Rothelsberger, Don Blatt, Joann Hall and Terry Edwards, and parents Darlene Jones and Donna Knarr, and teacher Sharon Torabzadeh.

Jones, Debbie Rice, Debbie Farley, George Marunich and Karen Clymer designed the athletic letters for Special Olympians under guidelines established by the Special Olympics program. The maroon and gold letters look like the school's regular athletic letters except for the Special Olympics emblem in the middle.

Only a few other states have qualified to award letters under the program. "We're real proud of that," Jones said.

The awards was held recently in the Pulaski County High School commons.
