The 23rd annual Roanoke Valley Horse Show will begin June 20 and last through June 26 at the Salem Civic Center.
The show, sponsored by the Junior League of Roanoke Valley, is billed as the largest multibreed indoor Class A show in Virginia, and includes the Rolex Grand Prix of Roanoke (June 26 at 2 p.m.) with a purse of $75,000.
This year, the horse show will feature family events such as pony rides and a petting zoo, as well as the Hunter, Hackney, Jumper, Harness, Saddlebred, Roadster, Racking and Western breeds. More than 1,000 horses are expected to compete.
Tickets are available through the civic center box office (375-3004 or 800-288-2111) and through TicketMaster locations.
Theater scholarships
The Blue Ridge Dinner Theatre, located at Ferrum College, has scholarships available for high school students and graduates for participation in its summer season. Summer interns will work with theater professionals and gain practical experience in technical theater and theater management from June 13 through July 24.

Book signing
Writer and National Public Radio commentator Donald McCaig will sign copies of his books and read from his latest, ``Nop's Hope,'' on June 9 at 5 p.m. at Mountain Book Company, 310 W. Main St., Covington.
``Nop's Hope'' is the sequel to the best-selling ``Nop's Trials.'' McCaig also has written eight previous books, including two nonfiction books on rural life, ``An American Homeplace'' and ``Eminent Dogs, Dangerous Men.''
History tour
The Roanoke Valley Historical Society will tour Cedar Hill, Oak Spring Farm, Sleepy Hollow, early 19th-century homes, Wade's Mill, the Buffalo Springs Herb Farm and the Cyrus McCormic Farm at Steeples Tavern on its bus tour of Rockbridge County on June 18. Photo workshop
The Virginia Museum of Transportation will offer a train photography workshop series this summer. On June 25, Heather Winkler, the museum's director of education, will instruct ``Introduction to Train Photography.''
Norfolk Southern employee and Roanoke photographer Tommy Firebaugh will lead the second workshop, ``Intermediate Train Photography,'' on July 9.
And on July 30, Norfolk Southern's photographer Michael Bickham will lead ``Advanced Train Photography.''
