Norfolk Southern spokesman Bob Auman said an engineer stopped the eastbound train around 8:30 p.m. just west of McCoy in Montgomery County, near the Giles County line.
"It certainly is a scary thing to do," Auman said of the group's action.
There were no reported injuries and the people involved were not at the scene when sheriff's deputies arrived, said Sgt. C.C. Thornton.
