ABC SHOWING CAVS' OPENER

Virginia's season-opening football game at defending national champion Florida State will be televised Sept. 3 by ABC Sports, it was announced Friday.

The ACC game will air at 3:30 p.m. The other regional telecasts in that time period are Boston College-Michigan and Washington-Southern Cal. ABC also will air two prime-time games that night - Notre Dame-Northwestern and Tennessee-UCLA.

ABC previously announced that North Carolina State's visit to UVa's Scott Stadium had been moved to Nov. 25, the day after Thanksgiving, for an 11 a.m. network kickoff.

Virginia made three appearances outside the conference TV package last year - two ESPN dates and the Carquest Bowl on CBS. The two ABC dates this season give the Cavaliers 27 network or national cable TV appearances, including six bowls, in coach George Welsh's 13 seasons.

Before Welsh's arrival from Navy in 1982, UVa had played only two NCAA regional TV dates, in 1958 and '75.

UVa's Sept. 15 game against Clemson is under consideration by ESPN for a prime-time telecast.
