MONK CATCHES ON IN N.Y. WITH JETS

Art Monk, the NFL's career receiving leader, agreed to contract terms with the New York Jets on Friday, ending his association with the Washington Redskins after 14 seasons.

Monk, a native of White Plains, N.Y., has caught 888 passes, at least one in each of his past 164 games. The streak leaves him 13 games shy of Steve Largent's NFL record.

"We're real excited to have Art join us," said Pete Carroll, the Jets' coach. "He's a proven player who understands what it takes to play in the big games, and we think that he'll be a real positive influence on our younger guys."

New York chose wide receiver Ryan Yarborough of Wyoming in the second round of the 1994 draft and picked another wideout, Orlando Parker of Troy State, in the sixth round.

Monk, 36, ranks among the career leaders in virtually every receiving category. He's played in 205 games, starting 177, and ranks fourth in yards with 12,026, trailing only James Lofton (14,004), Largent (13,089) and Charlie Joiner (12,146).

The 6-foot-3, 210 pound receiver established an NFL record with 106 receptions in 1984, a mark surpassed in each of the last two seasons by Green Bay's Sterling Sharpe, who caught 108 passes in 1992 and 112 in '93.

A three-time Pro Bowl selection who made $1.34 million last season, Monk rejected a $600,000 offer from the Redskins in April.

Monk caught 41 passes in 1993, the second fewest of his career, for 398 yards and two touchdowns.
