Layman, a 15-year-old ninth-grader for Glenvar, won her eighth consecutive game with an 11-strikeout three-hitter as the Highlanders beat James River 8-0 to win the Region C softball championship Friday at the Moyer Sports Complex.
Glenvar (16-7-1) claimed its fifth regional championship in the past six years with its eighth straight win. The Highlanders will make their sixth consecutive Group A tournament appearance when they play host to the Twin Springs-St. Paul loser next week.
Layman (11-4) lost to James River (18-5) early this season when she was not pitching well, but she had little trouble with the Knights on Friday. She retired the first 11 batters before Amber Vines lined a single to left field in the fourth.
"I knew I had [a no-hitter] through, like, four [innings]," said Layman, who has allowed one run in her past 28 innings. "After that [first hit], I just shook it off. If you don't, you'll be in trouble."
Glenvar scored once in each of the second and third innings off the Knights' own freshman pitcher, Sara Mundy (14-3), who shut out Floyd County on Thursday. The Highlanders then broke things open with four runs in the fourth.
Offensively for Glenvar, Christy Robinson had two triples and two RBI, and Stacey Shelor and Amy Maxwell had two hits each.
James River's offensive highlight was Angie Sink's one-hop, ground-rule double over the right-field fence in the seventh. James River 0000000-033 Glenvar 011411x-8121 S. Mundy, K. Mundy (3) and Davis; Layman and Dennis. W-Layman. L-S. Mundy.
Region C baseball
In Covington, David Henderson pitched six strong innings and Joey Taylor got Glenvar out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh as the Highlanders won their second straight Region C championship by handing Castlewood its first loss of the season, 5-2.
Taylor came in to strike out the Blue Devils' Barry Ruff with the bases full and nobody out in the top of the seventh. Chris Street followed with a line drive that hit the runner on first for the second out. Taylor struck out Ben Sharp to end the game and get the save.
Eric East had a single and two doubles and scored three times for Glenvar (19-2-1), which will be host to Pound in a Group AA first-round game. Castlewood (21-1) opens the state tournament by traveling to Powell Valley. Castlewood 1000100-272 Glenvar 201020x-583

Region IV baseball
In Hillsville, Carroll County scored the winning run on a balk by Gate City pitcher Brian Wolfe in the bottom of the seventh inning to cap a three-run rally, as the Cavaliers beat the Blue Devils 5-4 to win their first Region IV championship.
Carroll County (18-4), which set a school record for victories, trailed 4-2 entering the seventh but tied the score on Tony Berrier's two-run ground-rule double. Berrier advanced to third on Jason Kilbourne's groundout and scored when Wolfe did not complete a pickoff throw to first after he walked Willie Bryant intentionally.
Ray Briggs homered for Carroll, which is host to the Region III runner-up in the Group AA tournament next week. Shannon Carter hit a two-run homer for Gate City, which travels to the Region III champion. Gate City 2011000-462 Carroll County 0000113-572 B. Wolfe and J.
