BOARD SUSPENDS DIRECTOR

MARTINSVILLE - The director for the Department of Social Services in Henry County has been suspended without pay until a state police investigation of the department's finances is finished.

The county's Social Services Board voted Thursday to suspend Frances Beam, who was placed on paid leave April 7.

Once the investigation is complete, Beam ``may be disciplined or removed or may be reinstated with full or partial back pay,'' according to the motion made by board member Sandra Hodges.

As director, Beam oversaw a $2 million agency budget. She has worked for the agency almost 28 years and receives an annual salary of $52,442.

In April, the Social Services Board requested that the state audit the agency, and last month asked for a state police investigation.
