Landmark picks chief

Landmark Communications Inc., Norfolk-based parent of the Roanoke Times & World-News, on Friday named Douglas B. Fox its chief operating officer and president of its new Publishing and Video Group. Fox, who joins Landmark June 20, is corporate vice president/marketing of Times Mirror Newspaper Group, a unit of Times Mirror Co. of Los Angeles.

Also, Landmark Newspapers President Carl Mangum said he will retire this summer. He has been responsible for the company's metro newspapers in Roanoke, Norfolk and Greensboro, N.C., and 31 nondaily newspapers. Landmark operates newspapers, specialty publications, television stations and cable networks in 17 states and England.

Bankruptcy Court gets 5 petitions

Five petitions with business connections have been filed in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for Western Virginia at Roanoke.

Mertz and Muldoon Inc., trading as Hair 2000 at Pearisburg, sought liquidation, listing assets of $15,000 and liabilities of $52,888.

Appalachia Greenhouse Inc. of Coeburn asked for liquidation, listing assets of $200 and liabilities of $27,155.

Roger Ellett Bryant of 3215-D Chaparral Drive, Roanoke County, listed assets of $27,950 and liabilities of $64,796 in seeking liquidation. Bryant had an interest in Community Publishing of Salem and was a part-time referee.

Dennis R. Gilbert of North Tazewell, who had been in the sheet-metal business, asked for liquidation with assets of $4,195 and liabilities of $15,148.

Barbara J. Brooks of 1202 13th St. N.W. in Roanoke, a self-employed bookkeeper, asked for liquidation, listing assets of $3,809 and liabilities of $38,070.

Mercedes recalls 1,822 sedans

Mercedes-Benz of North America on Friday initiated a voluntary recall of about 1,822 of its early 1994 model C220 sedans to replace a throttle linkage assembly.

The linkage was inadequately lubricated at the factory and could stick when the accelerator pedal is released. The company has no reports of accidents or injuries due to the condition.
