REGION NEEDS 'VISION' BEYOND THE BOTTOM LINE

I wholeheartedly agreed with Scott McDowell when he stated in his Peril and Promise commentary: "I have had 'economic growth' shoved down my throat my entire life." I especially liked the verb, "shoved." Very appropriate. That's what I feel it is each time I see some new plan. Oh no, get ready to have some economic growth - some vision.

When Interstate 81 shoved its way through Botetourt County back in the 1960s, I remember everybody in the local vision department saying, "It will bring growth, economic development, what a vision." And the businesses along U.S. 11 turned into ghost towns and we gat a truck stop and an interchange, which have added little to the quality of our lives.\ Please see microfilm for complete text.
