VMI NAMES COACH NEW COMMANDANT

The new commandant of the Corps of Cadets at Virginia Military Institute will hit the ground running Monday.

Col. Michael L. Bozeman, the school's track and field coach since 1985, was named to the commandant's post Saturday by VMI Superintendent John Knapp.

Bozeman will replace Col. N. Michael Bissell, who is stepping down because of health reasons, according to a press release from VMI's public relations office.

A colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve, Bozeman assumed the duties of deputy commanding general of the 97th Army Reserve Command on June 1. The command includes 6,000 troops over a five-state area and has its headquarters at Fort Meade, Md.

Bozeman is a Vietnam veteran and his military awards include the silver and bronze stars.

He led the track and field and cross country teams to seven conference championships. Bozeman was named Southern Conference coach of the year seven times.

Before coming to VMI, Bozeman was an assistant track coach at the University of Florida. He is a leader in decathlon development and has coached U.S. teams in international competitions in Cuba, Japan and Germany.

Bozeman is a 1967 graduate of The Citadel and has a master's degree from the University of South Carolina.

Bozeman and his wife, Carol, have two children, Gioia and Robert.
