CAROLINA GOLFER LEADS KENRIDGE

Keith Kepley, a 29-year-old stockbroker from Charlotte, N.C., fired a 2-under-par 68 on Saturday to take the second-round lead in the Kenridge Invitational men's golf tournament at Farmington Country Club.

Kepley, who played collegiately at Duke, has a 36-hole total of 3-under 137 entering today's final round on the 6,725-yard, par-70 course.

Barry McCarty of Alexandria posted his second consecutive 69 and is alone in second at 138. Allen Barber, the 1992 State Amateur champion from Newport News, is tied for third at 139 with former Kenridge champion Pat Tallent of Alexandria.

Roanoke's Mike Smith, who shot a 69 on Saturday, heads the Southwest Virginia contingent at 142. Galax's Tom McKnight (143), Lexington's David Brogan (146) and Martinsville's Keith Decker (148) made the championship flight.

Other area players and their two-round totals include: Lexington's J.W. Entsminger (149); Roanoke's Jack Tuttle (150); Blacksburg's David Chalmers (151); Salem's Don Foster (153); Roanoke's Barry Wolfe (154); Roanoke's Ned Baber (158); and Roanoke's John Haner (160).
