PATRIOTS, FLEMING SHUT OUT

Patrick Henry and William Fleming did not have any first-place finishes Saturday on the second and final day of the Group AAA track and field meet, but the future of both boys' programs looks bright.

Only a relative unknown, Ian Winston of Hayfield, kept PH's Jamie Price from winning the 100- and 200-meter dashes in close finishes. So the Patriots' junior is the second-fastest runner in state boys' track with another year to go.

Winston, who never ran track until this year, also has another year left.

So does PH's Larry Jones, who placed sixth in the 110 hurdles. Jones' times coming into the meet didn't indicate he was a favorite, so his performance was a plus.

Together, Price and Jones scored 25 points, good enough to give the Patriots fourth place in the team competition. Their return gives coach Jeff Johnson time to find 16 more points, which is what his team would have needed Saturday to catch champion Menchville.

Don't forget Fleming, though. The Colonels lose Dominick Millner, but have a young team.

Millner placed fourth in the triple jump to go with a first Friday in the long jump, the only winning performance by a Roanoke Valley District athlete.

Fleming's greatest team accomplishment came in the final event - the 1,600 relay - with a team of Millner and sophomores Finn Crutchfield, David Harris and Rafiq Majied.

The Colonels were in the slow section of the race and were not expected to place, so coach Rudy Dillard gambled. Dillard switched Millner to the third leg and had Harris run the final 400 meters against speedy Gar-Field anchor Winston October.

First, Millner made up most of a big deficit. Then, Harris blew away October on the final leg. The Colonels' time of 3 minutes, 23.9 seconds led the slow section. When only four teams in the fast section bettered that time, Fleming was a surprising fifth. That meant Millner, who was jubilant over the finish, accounted for 14 1/2 points during the meet.

Millner said he nearly was unable to run in the relay.

"I'm happy I placed [in the triple jump]," said Fleming's senior leader, "but after my second jump, my [right] shin started hurting. I took a couple of aspirins and iced it down. I have a shin splint, and it's a requirement that I take aspirin."

Dillard said one reason he switched runners was because he felt Harris might have more kick for the anchor leg against October.

For Price, who scored 16 points without a first-place finish, it was a strong meet.

"I couldn't catch him [Winston]," the PH sprinter said of his new rival. "He caught up to me and passed me in both races. He said he had run against me, but I don't remember him."

Actually, Price beat Winston early in the spring in a meet at the University of Tennessee. But it was an improved Winston he faced Saturday.

"I had never run track before, but my father said I was pretty fast so I should try it," Winston said. "We [Price and Winston] should have a great rivalry next year."

Price can't wait.

"Next year, I'll be more prepared," he said. "He kind of surprised me. When I don't know someone, it's kind of hard to attack them."

Jones said he was relaxed for his hurdles event.

"I had no pressure because no one knew about me," he said. "Next year they'll know me."

Johnson said he believes Jones and Price will be better.

"They're the type of athletes who will work hard to improve," the Patriots' coach said. "We hope we can get Larry strong enough to score in both hurdles and both [long and triple] jumps. We want to find someone to go with them and have a good 400-meter relay team."

Centreville won the girls' title with 66 points, 16 more than second-place Menchville.

But no one could steal the spotlight from Woodrow Wilson's LaTasha Colander. Headed for North Carolina in the fall on a track scholarship, Colander ran Group AAA-record times in the 100 hurdles and the 100 and 200 dashes that were disallowed because they were ruled too wind-aided. Still, she won all three races easily after coming into the meet ranked as the fastest girl in the dashes in the U.S. high school ratings.

"It's my last race in high school and I wanted to give it all I had," Colander said. "The wind really pushed me. In the 100, I could have run a little better [than 11.6]." BOYS Team results
