FULL OF BOLOGNA, JAMES NORRIS KEPT STILL

PARATROOPER JAMES NORRIS of Roanoke landed in a bomb crater in the middle of a wheat field. It was still dark and his instructions were clear: sit tight until daybreak and do not draw attention to yourself. Whatever you do, don't start shooting.

Waiting there, Norris watched a German soldier ride past the crater's edge. He stayed silent. "He came right by us, and boy, he was moving. I could have knocked him off with my rifle, but I was scared to after they fed me that bologna, you know."
