We especially want to thank the many D-Day veterans in Western Virginia, those who supported them from the home front, and the families of the brave men who did not return for giving freely of their time to help with this project.
We would like to particularly thank John Robert Slaughter of Roanoke, a former printer and composing room foreman at this newspaper and D-Day veteran with Co. D, 116th Infantry, 29th Division, for his help in providing photographs and in locating other veterans for inclusion in this section.
Also of great help was John W. Listman Jr., command historian for the Virginia National Guard, who provided photographs and background information on the 29th Division and 116th Infantry. We appreciate Listman's contribution and that of the Guard for giving of his time.
Other military men who were of great help are Staff Sgt. Jeff Fry of the Department of Defense's 50th Anniversary of World War II Committee and Lt. Col. Deane Williams, of the U.S. Army's Center of Military History, both of whom went out of their way to answer our inquiries.
We hope our efforts justify all the help that has been given us. Thank you.
