FANTUZZI HITS BOOKS AND BASEBALLS

Washington and Lee's Graig Fantuzzi has been named a second-team GTE Academic All-American in baseball for the College Division.

Fantuzzi, a sophomore outfielder, hit a school-record .482 and led the Generals with 19 runs and 10 steals in 23 games. He carries a 4.23 grade-point average (with honors courses) on a 4.0 scale in engineering and administration to rank first in his class.

Fantuzzi's selection marks the 11th consecutive year W&L has had at least one Academic All-American.

In other sports in the region:

Second-year driver Billy Daniel of Rocky Mount earned the Curtis Turner Memorial Hard Charger Award for the eighth week of Late Model Stock racing at New River Valley Speedway in Radford. Daniel started 17th and finished eighth.

Alexander Jacobs, a defenseman from Roanoke, was a second-team selection on the U.S. Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association All-America squad. Jacobs, who attended North Cross School, is a junior at Denison College.
