CLAYTOR LAKE FISHING TOURNEY PLANNED JUNE 25

The ninth annual Claytor Lake State Park Family Fishing Tournament with a $5,000 prize to whoever catches a specially-tagged bass has been set for June 25.

Other cash prizes and trophies will be awarded in adult and youth (up to age 13) divisions for the largest fish in five categories: small-mouth and large-mouth bass, catfish, crappie and sunfish.

First-place prizes are $50 in the adult division and $25 in the youth division.

A consolation prize will be awarded if ``Sly Sam,'' the tagged bass, is caught after the tournament and before Sept. 6.

The tournament is sponsored by the park and 1260-J Radio.

New River Cruise Company will offer a free scenic cruise aboard the Pioneer Maid at 10 a.m. for tournament participants.

A warden from the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries will give a talk at 11 a.m. on Claytor Lake wildlife.

The tournament will start at 8 a.m. at the park gazebo. There is no registration fee, but anglers must have a registration card and check in with the tournament director. People can register and get tournament rules by visiting or calling the radio station (382-4993) or going to Blacksburg Feed and Seed; the Carpet Mart, also in Blacksburg; Furniture City, S.G. Wimmer and Sons or S&M Milling, all in Christiansburg; Heilig Myers Furniture Stores, in Christiansburg, Radford or Pulaski; or the park office (telephone 674-5492).

All preregistered participants are entitled to free parking and boat launching on the day of the event. Those without registration cards must pay the $2.50 parking fee.
