The agreement ends a national boycott against Goody's by the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union, which led to demonstrations by union members when the company opened its two Roanoke stores last August.
The contract provides a $1.70-per-hour wage increase over three years and cuts employee health insurance contributions nearly in half. The union said workers were being paid $5.25 per hour and being charged nearly $2,000 a year for health benefits.
The contract also provides life insurance for all employeees, overtime pay for Saturdays, double-time pay for Sundays and an additional week of vacation for employees with 10 years service.
The union praised Goody's "new management team" for making the contract possible. "The ultimate outcome of the collective bargaining process has resulted in the establishment of a relationship of openness and trust between Goody's and the [union]," said Mark Pitt, director of the union's Tennessee/Kentucky District.
