Eley, elected Monday night as the new PTA president, also proposed some summer programs that the PTA might sponsor.
He suggested working with the school's English department to come up with a summer reading list, and rewarding those students who read some of the books. ``I think that reading, perhaps, is one of the most marvelous things that any students can do to broaden their horizons.''
His son might not agree with him.
``He said, `Are you going to make me read this summer?'" Eley recalled, when he asked his son about such a program.
Eley emphasized that the reading should be voluntary. His son also raised the question of how to determine whether a student had actually read any of the recommended books. Eley suggested that teachers might design a set of questions that would indicate that the material had been understood.
He also suggested that the PTA look into a summer essay contest.
Eley said he had conferred with the outgoing president, the Rev. Richard Ashworth, and planned to meet with others this summer on PTA initiatives and increasing attendance at meetings.
``We need a couple of missing components in the equation. Number one, we need parents, and, number two, we need teachers,'' he said.
Bob Goad was elected PTA vice president-finance for the coming year; Mary Ann Wiley, vice president-activities; Vangie Shockley, secretary; and Melissa Dobbins, treasurer.
