WYTHEVILLE PROBATION OFFICE FIRE APPARENTLY WAS ARSON

Investigators are looking into an apparent attempt to burn down the Wytheville Probation and Parole office.

A fire in the building last weekend caused an estimated $12,000 worth of damage, caused mainly by smoke. Ye Olde Shetland Shoppe, located in the basement of the building at Sixth and Franklin streets, had some minor smoke damage.

Investigator Marty Alford of the Wytheville Police Department said a rear window was broken and an incendiary device tossed inside sometime between 7 p.m. Friday and 9:45 a.m. Saturday.

However, the device landed on fire-resistant rubber matting and did not spread through the building.

The fire burned itself out.
