LISA FREELAND BENNETT, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Freeland of Roanoke, recently received the Wall Street Journal Award at Freed-Hardeman University, Henderson, Tenn.

Bennett is a senior accounting major.

\ HEATHER GENTRY, daughter of Joseph and Carol Gentry of 5709 Castle Rock Road, has received an Honor Scholarship to Salem College.

The scholarship pays $4,000 each year for four years. Gentry was awarded the scholarship because of her leadership and service accomplishments at Cave Spring High School, where she is a senior.

\ JENNIFER GREEN, daughter of Rodney and Rickey Green of 4825 Keagy Road, has won an Honor Scholarship to Salem College in Winston-Salem, N.C.

The scholarship pays $4,000 each year for four years. Green was awarded the scholarship because of her leadership and service accomplishments at Cave Spring High School, where she is a senior.

\ COURTNEY ALLISON TUCKER, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl M. Tucker of 2615 Carolina Ave. S.W., has been selected for membership in KATHEKON, a service organization at Washington & Lee University.

\ NADIA S. GUERTLER and CHRISTINE GRECUS have been selected to attend the Governor's Academy of Foreign Language.

Guertler will attend the German Academy at Randolph-Macon College, and Grecus will attend the Japanese Language Academy at the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind in Hampton.

\ WILLIAM BYRD HIGH SCHOOL announced that the following students have been selected for the Kiwanis Club's "Distinguished Student Award": Brian E. Taylor, technology education; Nicole L. Spradlin, fashion marketing; Michael Sutton, accounting; Brian S. Hannabass, general marketing; Samantha Huffman, word processing; and Tim Perdue, masonry.

The students will be honored at a luncheon, receive a certificate and be eligible for a cash award.

\ JENNIFER PARKER and ERICA ANN PANDAPAS, both Roanoke students at Hollins College, were recognized during the college's recent honors convocation.

Parker, an adult student in the Horizon Program, received the F.J. McGuigan Psychology Award for Excellence. Parker has a concentration in education and psychology.

Pandapas, daughter of John and Aileen Pandapas, received the David L. Longfellow History Prize. Pandapas is a freshman.

\ DEBORAH G. LYNN of Roanoke has been named to the Hollins College Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, Virginia Iota.

Lynn, an adult student in the Horizon program at Hollins, is a psychology major.

\ ERIN DONCHERS and RIENNE JONES were selected as co-recipients of the 1993 Richard E. Morgan-SAR Essay Contest.

The Patrick Henry High School students will receive a $1,000 savings bond from the Fincastle Resolution's Chapter Sons of the American Revolution.

The essays of Aaron Chandler, John Eure, Eric Katz, Richard Light, Tanya Smart and John Harris were noted as warranting "special mention."

\ KELLY SHORT, a freshman honors student at Patrick Henry High School, won first place, best-of-show in the International Creative Arts Festival.

This is the eighth year Short has won the competition. Her poem "My Darling Line" won the poetry category.

The International Creative Arts Festival is a competition of hearing-impaired students in all English-speaking countries. Short's best-of-show award honors her superior achievements in writing.

Short will receive cash prizes and a weekend trip to Chicago to accept her awards.

\ CARON CAUSEY and ETHAN VIA received the national I Dare You leadership award in recognition of personal integrity, balanced living and potential for leadership.

Causey is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Causey. Via is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Warren G. Via Jr.

The award is made available each year by the American Youth Foundation in cooperation with principals, headmasters and 4-H county agents across the country. In addition to a certificate of recognition, Causey and Via received a scholarship opportunity to attend the American Youth Foundation's International Leadership Conference in Michigan or New Hampshire.

\ KRISTY RATCLIFFE from Roanoke received the Leonard and Melva Harris Scholarship at Virginia Tech.

The scholarship, established through gifts from the Harrises, is designated for students pursuing a degree in the sciences.

Ratcliffe, a graduate of Patrick Henry High School, will major in biology.

\ HEATHER HARTMAN, daughter of Michael and Terese Hartman of Roanoke, received the Outstanding Senior in Psychology award at Lynchburg College.

Hartman, a senior life sciences major, is a 1991 graduate of Cave Spring High School.

\ WASHINGTON AND LEE UNIVERSITY has announced the names of three juniors from Roanoke who have been chosen as freshman dormitory counselors for the 1994-1995 academic year.

They are: Adam M. Williams, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. Ray Williams of Skylark Circle; James M. Turner III, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Turner Jr. of Wycliff Avenue; and Elizabeth G. Weaver, daughter of Holly L.H. Weaver of Stonehenge Square.

\ COURTNEY A. TUCKER, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl M. Tucker of Roanoke, was chosen as the Personnel Chair in Washington and Lee University's 1996 Mock Convention.

Student delegates at the convention will attempt to predict the presidential nominee for the Republican party. Tucker, a sophomore, will be one of three overseeing the event.

\ JULIE ROBINETTE, daughter of Stephen and Teresa Frye and Guy Robinette of Roanoke, earned a 4.0 grade-point average in her first semester of graduate school.

Robinette is working toward a master's in occupational therapy at Shenandoah University in Winchester.

\ DONNA ATKINSON of Roanoke recently earned the Certified Medical Assistant credential by passing the American Association of Medical Assistants' Certification Examination.

Atkinson, a graduate of National Business College in Roanoke, is employed by Carilion Service.

\ JEFF SHELTON and MARY MARGARET MCCAIN, students at Cave Spring High, recently won awards in Ferrum College's Up & Coming Artist's '94 show. Shelton received a Judge's Choice award for his work, "Biogenesis," and McCain received an honorable mention for her untitled plaster sculpture.

Other Cave Spring students displaying work in the show included Cary Bush, Sarah Page and Lisa Sweet.

\ JENNY SHEETS, daughter of Dale and Becky Sheets of Roanoke, recently won the 800 meter race at the Southern Conference Championship.

Sheets, a 1990 graduate of Cave Spring High School, has been ranked All Conference for the third season at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina.

\ WASHINGTON AND LEE UNIVERSITY has announced the names of Roanoke Valley students who were named to the dean's list for the winter term. They are: Ashley E. Bell, sophomore, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Houston Bell Jr. of Salem; Jennifer B. Royster, sophomore, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. R.L. Royster Jr. of Roanoke; Elizabeth G. Weaver, junior, daughter of Holly L.H. Weaver of Roanoke; and Meredith G. Winn, sophomore, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Thomas M. Winn of Roanoke.

\ DICK CLEMMER, chairman of Patrick Henry High School's Tech Prep Committee, and ELAINE WOOLWINE, principal of Gibboney Tech Center, were presenters at the National Tech Prep Network Spring Conference. They gave a workshop entitled "The Tech Prep Seal: Don't Leave School Without It" and represented Patrick Henry and the Roanoke Area Tech Prep Consortium.

\ JENNIFER LOWE of Roanoke was elected Princess of May as part of Earth Day celebration at Bridgewater College.

\ DAVID C. LLOYD of Roanoke was inducted into the National Honor Society at Shenandoah University.

\ L. TEMPLE FORSYTH and GARLAND LYNN , both of Roanoke, were named to the third quarter high list at Episcopal High School.

Forsyth, a sophomore, is the daughter of Logan and Louise Forsyth. Lynn, also a sophomore, is the son of Mr. and Mr. Richard M. Lynn.

\ BRANDON ROBERT CORNETT, son of Jim and Joyce Cornett of Roanoke County, has been inducted into Sigma Delta Pi, a national language honor society at Virginia Military Institute. The junior, who is majoring in history, is a graduate of Cave Spring High School.
