IN SCHOOL

JENNIFER PARKER and ERICA ANN PANDAPAS, both Roanoke students at Hollins College, were recognized during the college's recent honors convocation.

Parker, an adult student in the Horizon Program, received the F.J. McGuigan Psychology Award for Excellence. Parker has a concentration in education and psychology.

Pandapas, daughter of John and Aileen Pandapas, received the David L. Longfellow History Prize. Pandapas is a freshman.

\ NADIA S. GUERTLER and CHRISTINE GRECUS have been selected to attend the Governor's Academy of Foreign Language.

Guertler will attend the German Academy at Randolph-Macon College, and Grecus will attend the Japanese Language Academy at the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind in Hampton.

\ DEBORAH G. LYNN of Roanoke has been named to the Hollins College Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, Virginia Iota.

Lynn, an adult student in the Horizon program at Hollins, is a psychology major.

\ ERIN DONCHERS and RIENNE JONES were selected as co-recipients of the 1993 Richard E. Morgan-SAR Essay Contest.

The Patrick Henry High School students will receive a $1,000 savings bond from the Fincastle Resolution's Chapter Sons of the American Revolution.

The essays of Aaron Chandler, John Eure, Eric Katz, Richard Light, Tanya Smart and John Harris were noted as warranting "special mention."

\ CARON CAUSEY and ETHAN VIA received the national I Dare You leadership award in recognition of personal integrity, balanced living and potential for leadership.

Causey is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Causey. Via is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Warren G. Via Jr.

The award is made available each year by the American Youth Foundation in cooperation with principals, headmasters and 4-H county agents across the country. In addition to a certificate of recognition, Causey and Via received a scholarship opportunity to attend the American Youth Foundation's International Leadership Conference in Michigan or New Hampshire.

\ HEATHER AMMERMANN, daughter of Gifford and Eleanor Ammermann of Roanoke, recently received an Eastman Kodak Scholarship and was selected for membership in Sigma Mu Scholarship Society at Emory & Henry College.

\ COURTNEY A. TUCKER, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl M. Tucker of Roanoke, was chosen as the Personnel Chair in Washington and Lee University's 1996 Mock Convention.

Student delegates at the convention will attempt to predict the presidential nominee for the Republican party. Tucker, a sophomore, will be one of three overseeing the event.

\ JULIE ROBINETTE, daughter of Stephen and Teresa Frye and Guy Robinette of Roanoke, earned a 4.0 grade-point average in her first semester of graduate school.

Robinette is working toward a master's in occupational therapy at Shenandoah University in Winchester.

\ DONNA ATKINSON of Roanoke recently earned the Certified Medical Assistant credential by passing the American Association of Medical Assistants' Certification Examination.

Atkinson, a graduate of National Business College in Roanoke, is employed by Carilion Service.

\ KELLY SHORT, a freshman honors student at Patrick Henry High School, won first place in the International Creative Arts Festival for her poem "My Darling Kline."

The Creative Arts Festival is a competition of hearing-impaired students in all English-speaking countries. Kelly won cash prizes and a weekend trip to Chicago to accept the award.

\ WASHINGTON AND LEE UNIVERSITY has announced the names of Roanoke Valley students who were named to the dean's list for the winter term. They are: Ashley E. Bell, sophomore, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Houston Bell Jr. of Salem; Jennifer B. Royster, sophomore, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. R.L. Royster Jr. of Roanoke; Elizabeth G. Weaver, junior, daughter of Holly L.H. Weaver of Roanoke; and Meredith G. Winn, sophomore, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Thomas M. Winn of Roanoke.

\ DICK CLEMMER, chairman of Patrick Henry High School's Tech Prep Committee, and \ ELAINE WOOLWINE, principal of Gibboney Tech Center, were presenters at the National Tech Prep Network Spring Conference. They gave a workshop entitled "The Tech Prep Seal: Don't Leave School Without It" and represented Patrick Henry and the Roanoke Area Tech Prep Consortium.

\ LISA M. LEE, daughter of Alice M. Lee of Blue Ridge, recently graduated from Randolph-Macon Woman's College as an English and philosophy major. She is a graduate of Lord Botetourt High School.

\ DAVID C. LLOYD of Roanoke was inducted into the National Honor Society at Shenandoah University.

\ L. TEMPLE FORSYTH and GARLAND LYNN , both of Roanoke, were named to the third quarter high list at Episcopal High School.

Forsyth, a sophomore, is the daughter of Logan and Louise Forsyth. Lynn, also a sophomore, is the son of Mr. and Mr. Richard M. Lynn.

\ JAMES J. NOON, son of James Noon of Roanoke and a sales representative with Mine Safety Appliances Inc, received the Deike-Ryan Memorial Scholarship, worth $12,000 over four years. The scholarship recognizes outstanding academic achievement by children of Mine Safety Appliances Co. employees.

Noon will graduate from Northside and will attend the College of William and Mary.

\ BEAUFORT MARTIN, son of Geneva Martin of Roanoke, received the Myrtle Bell Lane Scholar Award at Lynchburg College. This award is based on academic performance, contribution to the School of Business, extra-curricular activities and financial need.

\ SAMANTHA HUFFMAN and JULIE REED of William Byrd High School, placed in the Future Business Leaders of America State Leadership Conference. Huffman placed fourth in the state in office procedures, and Reed placed fourth in the state in word processing competition.

\ VIRGINIA WESTERN COMMUNITY COLLEGE has named the recipients of Donald Willson Memorial Scholarships, which are presented to the best actor or actress and best technician. The recipients were: Josh Cokendolpher, Mary Jane Conklin and Jason Ward. All are members of a drama workshop class at Virginia Western.

\ EMORY & HENRY COLLEGE has announced the names of Roanoke Valley students who have graduated.

Those from Roanoke are: Melissa Lynn Bassett, daughter of Doris and Herbert Fischer, double major in French and political science; Beth Eileen Blankenship, daughter of Judy and Ron Blankenship, psychology; William Todd Creasy, son of Linda Creasy and Michael Creasy, political science and geography; Derek Scott Elmore, son of Georgene Elmore and Wayne Elmore, management; William Travis Jones, son of Jean Lawrence and William Kyle Jones, management; Brian Edward Leland, son of Rev. \ WILLIAM BYRD HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE DEPARTMENT MEMBERS have written material that has been published in a book, "Teaching Environmental Economics: Concepts and Strategies."

The science teachers involved are: Dennis Casey, Linda Catron, Richard Kelly, Billy Meador, Betty Smones, and Betty Ward. The book is as collection of labs to teach environmental economics to students.

\ DEBBIE WILLIAMS, a German teacher at William Byrd High School, has been selected to participate in a course "Attaining Oral Proficiency in German." The participants will live in the German house at the University of Virginia for three weeks and will study German language, culture and post-war Germany.

\ AMANDA L. BELANGER, daughter of Robert R. and Marian P. Belanger of Roanoke, received the Greater Roanoke Valley Scholarship at Virginia Intermont College's Honors Day ceremony. She is a freshman.

\ CRYSTAL P. SIMPSON and KENNETH W. LANIER JR. have won scholarships at Virginia Western Community College.

Simpson, a second-year education major, is the recipient of the Mr. and Mrs. Emanuel Payne Scholarship. She is a graduate of Northside High School. In addition to her full-time studies at Virginia Western, she works part time for American Family Life Assurance Co. She will attend Hampton University in the fall to earn a degree in psychology.

Lanier, a second-year electrical engineering technology major, is the recipient of the Continental Societies Inc. Scholarship. He will attend East Tennessee State University in the fall and pursue a degree in biomedical engineering. He also works at American Medical Supplies.

\ TIFFANY MONIQUE SPEAKS, a 1994 Duke University graduate, is a recipient of the William J. Griffith University Service Award.

The award honors the university's vice president emeritus for his community work.

\ BRENDA E. DULANEY of Roanoke was accepted to National Business College's dean list for the final winter term.

\ ANDREA ELIAS of Roanoke was appointed orientation director at the University of Tennesse in Knoxville. To be considered for a position, students are required to have two letters of recommendation and a minimum GPA of 2.25.

Elias is a public relations major.
