IN SCHOOL

AMY MOFFITT and ISHA EDMONDS, students at William Fleming High School, placed in the Creative Writing Contest of the Arts Department, sponsored by the Woman's Club of Roanoke. Moffitt won first place, and Edmonds was second place in poetry. Moffitt will advance to state competition.

\ CADET RUSSELL BOOTH, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Booth of Roanoke, was named to the academic honors list at Hargrave Military Academy for the fifth grading period. He is a freshman.

\ JACQUELYN CHRISTIANE HINMAN and JOMA SHANE WHISNANT have received the Col. William Preston Chapter, Daughters Of The American Revolution's "Good Citizen" awards.

Hinman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hinman, is a senior at Roanoke Catholic; and Whisnant, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward L. Whisnant, is a senior at Northside.

Students selected as a good citizen must exhibit the qualities of leadership, dependability, service and patriotism.

\ AVERETT COLLEGE had 11 Roanoke Valley students in its 1994 spring graduation.

Receiving bachelor of business administration degrees are: Robert Daniel Bowles; Flora Tan Cantor, magna cum laude; Gary Wayne Davis; Ann Margaret K. Harvey, summa cum laude; Hazel Chappell Law; Danny Leon Musselman; Nancy Goin Thomas, cum laude; and Debra Holt Walters, all of Roanoke; and James T. Rose of Salem.

Daniel Amadu Grey and Dale Cameron Amos, both of Roanoke, received master of business administration degrees.

\ SUSAN JOHNSON, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Page Johnson of Roanoke, has been selected for membership in Mortar Board at Salem College in Winston-Salem, N.C. Mortar Board is a national honor society that recognizes outstanding students who have excelled in academics, service, and leadership.

She also was selected for membership Omicron Delta Kappa Society.

\ LYNCHBURG COLLEGE has inducted four Roanoke-area students into Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society. They are: Kathryn Franke, daughter of Walter and Bernice Franke of Salem, a junior communications major; Heather Hartman, daughter of Michael and Terese Hartman of Roanoke, a senior life sciences major; Debra Lovelace of Roanoke, a graduate student in personnel management; and Michael Wolf, son of Leonora Wolf of Roanoke, a junior political science major.

\ MARY CATHERINE MILLER, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. J. Milton Miller of Roanoke, won the first place award in the North Carolina Ultrasound Society 1994 Scientific Exhibit Competition.

\ ROANOKE COLLEGE recently recognized students from the Roanoke Valley for academic excellence.

Brugh, Frank E. Snow Award; Kristine L. Garren, Karl W. Beck Memorial Award; and Lora L. Schwehr, Phi Beta Kappa Club Scholarship. Vinton recipients are: Carmen R. Agra-Boitnott, William H. Castle Accounting Award and Alpha Kappa Psi Key and Certificate; Susan E. Gross, Sam R. Good Award; Jennifer L. Mullin, Fortnightly Club Scholarship; and Robert L. Ward III, William Sandridge Leadership Award.

Hubert P. Firebaugh of Daleville received the Fine Arts Prize in Music.

Those named senior scholars are: Lucinda K. Buchanan, Elizabeth A. Foti, Kari D. Hall, James T. Jordan, Erica A. Lipps, Christopher R. Rhodes, David W. Thompson and Kathryn P. Weaver, all from Roanoke.

The junior scholars are: Karen A. Alexander, Jeffrey A. Beckner, Domitila S. Damewood, Katherine L. Dowdy, J. Heather Graybeal, S. Kyle Highfill, Jacqueline D. McBride, Margaret E. Morris and Amy L. Rader, all of Roanoke.

Alpha Lambda Delta Senior certificates were awarded to students who graduated with a 3.5 or above average, including David W. Thompson of Roanoke and Danyel D. Brugh of Salem. Recognized for membership in Alpha Kappa Delta, a national honorary society for superior records in sociology are: Lucinda K. Buchanan, John W. Garrett IV, Beth G. Hungate, Ashli K. Jones, Belva J. Recognized for membership in Pi Sigma Alpha, a national political science honor society for students with superior academic records: Paul A. Branin of Roanoke, Whitwell C. Kelly of Salem and Mary K. Whitlock of Troutville. Stacy L. Greenway of Salem was named for membership in Pi Mu Epsilon, a national honor fraternity for excellence in mathematics. Katherine A. Combiths of Roanoke and Scott S. Critzer of Fincastle were recognized for membership in Sigma Tau Delta, a national honor society recognizing superior achievement of English majors.

Margaret E. Morris of Roanoke was nominated for membership in Psi Chi, a national honor society for psychology majors.

Recognized for membership in Xi Theta Chi, an honorary fraternity for students showing proficiency in modern languages, were: Denise C. Clark, Anthony M. Hopper, Susan E. Johnston and Michelle L. McCoy, Roanoke; and Jennifer K. DeGolyer, Eric-Gene Shrewsbury, and Leslie E. Waid, Salem.

\ ADDRINE M. PUCKETT, daugher of Teresa Bailey, has been named a United States National Award winner in art by the United States Achievement Academy. The Academy recognizes less than 10 percent of all American high school students.

\ DUKE UNIVERSITY named the following students from Roanoke to the dean's list for the 1993-94 academic year: Nicole Ann Basile, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Michael Joseph Basile; Sarah Katherine Laughon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth C. Laughon; Catherine Michelle Obenshain, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph B. Obenshain; Harriet Augusta Vance, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Samuel F. Vance III; Julie Michelle Walden, daughter of Judith Beemer Walden.

\ BRENDA ASHCRAFT, Project College and English teacher at William Fleming High School, has been selected for inclusion in the Sterling Who's Who, 1994-95, Executive Edition. Candidates are selected on the basis of high standards of professionalism and achievement within their own organization or industry.

\ THE KIWANIS CLUB recently honored several Roanoke high school students at its annual awards luncheon.

\ ANGEL THOMPSON, daughter of James H. and Gelene T. Thompson of Roanoke, was recognized recently during Appalachian State University's School of Music Awards Day. Thompson, a senior cello performance and music education major, received a $300 Gamma Eta Chapter of Pi Kappa Lambda Scholarship and was elected top Pi Kappa Lambda Music Honor Fraternity.

\ DUKE UNIVERSITY recently awarded degrees to the following Roanoke Valley students: Nicole Ann Basile, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Michael Joseph Basile, cum laude, bachelor of arts; Cristina Elizabeth Davis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Buddy Arnold Davis, bachelor of science; Elizabeth Holden Rocovich, daughter of Mr. and Dr. John George Rocovich, cum laude, bachelor of arts; Harriet Augusta Vance, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Samuel F. Vance III, cum laude, bachelor of arts; Ericka Nicole Wilcher, daughter of Adahna Robertson, bachelor of arts.

\ KELLY RAE ROBERTS, a junior biology major at Virginia Intermont College, has been awarded a stipend to work and study at the National Institute of Health outside of Washington, D.C. Roberts will participate in the "Summer Intramural Research Award Fellowship," and work in the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development division in cell biology and metabolism. Roberts was chosen after taking a tour of the facility and meeting some of the doctors.
