BRENDA ASHCRAFT, Project College and English teacher at William Fleming High School, has been selected for inclusion in the Sterling Who's Who, 1994-95, Executive Edition. Candidates are selected on the basis of high standards of professionalism and achievement within their own organization or industry.

\ THE KIWANIS CLUB recently honored several Roanoke high school students at its annual awards luncheon.

Patrick Henry High School students who were recognized and their fields were: Yen Lieu, accounting; Quanya Jeffries, health careers; Lisa E. Stanley, cosmetology; Bobbi Jo Carmer,printing; Heather M. Cormany, office systems; Heidi L. A. Krummert, marketing; William B. Harbor, machine tool; John Van Lew V, auto body; Joseph S. Farris, technology education; Dale W. Gish, business computer technology; Aaron D. Taylor, marketing; Clayton Eric Damewood, engine technology; Michelle Eanes, information systems.

The following students from William Fleming High School were recognized: Keith Lawhorn, aeronautical science technology; Ebony C. Mitchell, recipient of Lloyd G. Bair Super Achiever Award, office systems; Lisa A. Belcher, accounting computer technology; Evanabeth Jamay Belcher, health careers, Deedra D. Weeks, industrial cooperative training; Thuy Le, accounting; Ronald Crowder, welding technology; Stephen Penn, electronics; Shawn L. Williams, construction technology; Sean Christopher Rider, business computer technology; Ronald Gray, culinary arts; Kelli Smith, child care operations; Jeannette Craighead, consumer and homemaking; Jason Mundy, metals technology; Scott Markham, power systems technology; Josh Davis, architectural and engineering design; Christie Jones, employability development; Celeste Y. Almanza, marketing.

\ ANGEL THOMPSON, daughter of James H. and Gelene T. Thompson of Roanoke, was recognized recently during Appalachian State University's School of Music Awards Day. Thompson, a senior cello performance and music education major, received a $300 Gamma Eta Chapter of Pi Kappa Lambda Scholarship and was elected top Pi Kappa Lambda Music Honor Fraternity.

\ MICHELLE VANIELS, a student at the University of Virginia McIntire School, has been awarded merit scholarships from Phi Eta Sigma, an honorary fraternity, and Central Fidelity Banks Inc. She is a 1991 graduate of Cave Spring High School.

\ DUKE UNIVERSITY recently awarded degrees to the following Roanoke Valley students: Nicole Ann Basile, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Michael Joseph Basile, cum laude, bachelor of arts; Cristina Elizabeth Davis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Buddy Arnold Davis, bachelor of science; Elizabeth Holden Rocovich, daughter of Mr. and Dr. John George Rocovich, cum laude, bachelor of arts; Harriet Augusta Vance, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Samuel F. Vance III, cum laude, bachelor of arts; Ericka Nicole Wilcher, daughter of Adahna Robertson, bachelor of arts.

\ KELLY RAE ROBERTS, a junior biology major at Virginia Intermont College, has been awarded a stipend to work and study at the National Institute of Health outside of Washington, D.C. Roberts will participate in the "Summer Intramural Research Award Fellowship," and work in the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development division in cell biology and metabolism. Roberts was chosen after taking a tour of the facility and meeting some of the doctors. Roberts plans to attend medical school after graduation.

\ ELIZABETH M. WILES, daughter of William A. Wiles of Roanoke, received a National Merit Scholarship from Norfolk Southern Corporation. Norfolk Southern awarded scholarships to selected students who are children of Norfolk Southern employees.

\ HAMPDEN-SYDNEY COLLEGE recently awarded degrees to the following Roanoke Valley residents: Eric Franklin Early, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest F. Early, bachelor of arts; N. Douglas Payne Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald D. Ryan, bachelor of arts; Robert Woods Spessard III, son of Hesta Spessard, bachelor of arts; James Brian Hopkins, son of Mr. and Mrs. James S. Hopkins, Jr., bachelor of arts; Bradford Keith Harris, son of Mr. and Mrs. Franklin E. Harris, bachelor of arts; Geoffrey Keith Gilmore, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard E. Gilmore, bachelor of arts; Peter A. Hall, son of Mrs. Nance A. Hall, bachelor of arts; John Cason Newbern, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jess Newbern III, bachelor of science.

\ SARA KEMPER GOODMAN of Roanoke recently graduated with a bachelor of arts from Campbell University.

\ EAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY, in Greenville, N.C., has announced the names of those Roanoke area students who were named to honors lists. The chancellor's list names those students who have received all A's; the dean's list is those with a B-plus average; and the honor roll includes students with a B average.

Michelle Ann Barbery, daughter of Edwin C. and Christina C. Barbery of Roanoke, has been named to the chancellor's list.

Those named to the dean's list are: Charlotte E. McDonald, daughter of Thomas R. McDonald of Roanoke, and Charlotte S. McDonald of Salem; Abigail Leigh Pack, daughter of Joel and Emily Pack, of Roanoke; and Melanie Love Morris, daughter of Linda W. Morris, of Roanoke.

Those named to the honor roll are: Terence James McNulty, son of Colleen B. McNulty, of Roanoke; Heather Lee O'Brian, daughter of Jerry D. and Rita Lee O'Brian of Roanoke; and Beth Ellyn Dinnerville, daughter of Robert and Janice Dinnerville, of Roanoke.

\ ODYSSEY OF THE MIND has announced its state winners from the Roanoke area. The first place winners will advance to the World Finals in Iowa in June.

Cave Spring Junior High won first in Division 2, miniterrain vehicles; Stonewall Jackson Middle School, second, Division 2, Set It Free; Lord Botetourt High School, third, Division 3, OMbelievable Music; and Penn Forest Elementary, third, Division 1, Set It Free.

Cave Spring Junior High, Division 3, won a Renatra Fusca Award for creativity.

\ CROSSROADS K MART has announced the local winners in "It's a Snap" photo contest, which promoted creativity and taught children to be more aware of environmental issues. Sterling Derrant, of Roanoke, is the grand prize winner and will receive a $5,000 savings bond. The honorable mention first place winner is Andrew Bolton, who will receive $500 in Kodak cameras and supplies. Mathew Conner won honorable mention second place. All three winners are second-graders at Preston Park School and will have their photos entered in a contest of more than 7,500 entries nationwide.

\ GEORGE BRENT SHORTER, son of Margaret P. and George W. Shorter of Roanoke and a student at Cave Spring High School, received the John T. Caldwell Alumni Scholarship from North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC.

The scholarship was awarded on the basis of leadership, scholarship, citizenship and potential.
