On the German exam, those receiving top honors in German II were: Jessie Beach, Jennifer Krippel, Amanda Lytton, Jennifer Hobbs, Julie Duvall, Benjamin Snyder, and Nicole Johnson.
Receiving top honors in German III were: Daniel Brad White, Evan Maxey, William Overstreet, Melissa Dare Andrews, Robin Amos, Meridith Paige Andrews, Jason Porter, and Richard Brogan.
Those receiving top recognition in German IV include: Nadia Guertler, Christopher Williams, James Goforth, Rosalind Doty, Joey Ball, Jay Reynolds, Summer Miller, and Troy Farmer.
For the Latin exam, in Latin Poetry, John Conner received a gold medal and a Summa Cum Laude certificate and Jennifer Clem received a Magna Cum Laude certificate.
In Latin I, Steven Faw received a Silver Medal and a Maxima Cum Laude certificate.
In Latin II, Steven Sides received a Magna Cum Laude certificate, and Victor Nathan Wilcox received a Cum Laude certificate.
\ HOLLINS COLLEGE recently awarded bachelor of arts degrees to several Roanoke area students.
Those from Roanoke are: Bethany Leigh Blankenship, daughter of H.R. and Melody Blankenship; Debbie Diane Brown, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gary Robertson; Katrina Kai Duerk, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G.R. Duerk; Kellee Elizabeth McDowell, daughter of Calvin McDowell and Libby Camper; Angela Renee Selfe, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David R. Selfe. From Troutville: Deidre Nicole Mattox, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Larry R. Mattox.
Adult students participating in the school's Horizon program also received bachelor of arts degrees. Sherri Lynn Fialko, an adult student from Roanoke and an art studio and psychology major, received the Gold Faculty Award For Academic Excellence as one of two valedictorians in the class of 1994.
\ THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF TEACHERS OF FRENCH recently named several Roanoke Valley students who competed and placed in the The National French Contest.
The Roanoke area winners in Level 1 were: Shari Perkins of North Cross, first place; Tracy Reed and Marie Keith, both of Lord Botetourt, second place tie; Lindsey Hoagland of North Cross, third place; Amanda Jones, Meagan Crowder, and Justin Hurst, all of Lord Botetourt, received fourth, fifth and sixth place, respectively.
Level 2 winners were: Sylvana Sinha of North Cross, first place; Andrea Henderson of Lord Botetourt, second place; Karen Jargowsky and Sara Dudley, both of Lord Botetourt, third place tie; Mary Beth Ladenheim of Lord Botetourt, fourth place; Stephanie Yost and Kari McGlamary, both of Lord Botetourt, fifth place tie; and Leigh Ann Jones of William Fleming, sixth place.
Level 3 winners were: Jason Mundy of Salem High School, first place; Evan Richardson of Lord Botetourt, second place; Claire Brewer of Fleming and Alyson Montgomery of Lord Botetourt, third place tie; Emily Morrison and Cindy Harris, both of Lord Botetourt, fourth place tie; Christy Fons and April Mattox, both of Lord Botetourt, placed fifth and sixth, respectively.
Kristina Patterson of Lord Botetourt placed first in the Roanoke area and third in the state on Level 4.
On Level 5, Sandra Williams of Cave Spring was first in the area, state and region; and Khaled Alami of Cave Spring was second in the area, state and region and fifth in the nation.
\ ROANOKE CATHOLIC SCHOOL recently honored several students at its Honors Convocation.
Boys and Girls State nominees were: Bethany Miller and Tony Joyce. Outstanding Service Awards were awarded to Milana Drewry, Brian Slenski, Tiffany Arrington, Poppy Bilbra-Jacobs, Philip Buch, Jackie Hinman and Danny Rowland.
Tiffany Arrington received the Most Outstanding Service Award for the Third Quarter for the Entire School.
Travis Slusher, Jennifer O'Meara, Tara Webb, Beau King and Mary Molinary each received General Excellence Awards for their grades. Mary Molinary received the General Excellence Award for the Entire School.
\ MARY SPRUILL, daughter of Bonny Spruill of Roanoke, recently received a student leadership award from George Mason University.
Spruill, an international studies major, serves on the honor committee, as an alternate student representative to the school's Board of Visitors and is a resident adviser.
\ THE COLLEGE OF WILLIAM AND MARY has announced the names of Roanoke Valley graduates.

\ THE TANDY TECHNOLOGY SCHOLARS has named several Roanoke high school students and teachers nominated by their schools who are eligible to compete for scholarships in the areas of math, science and computer science.
The nominees for Outstanding Math/Science/Computer Science Student are: David Arthur Kunkle and Erik William Rosolowsky, Cave Spring; and Brian Powell Short and Matthew Shane Jones, William Fleming.
The nominees for the top 2 percent of their senior class are: Julie Ann Floryan, Nancy Emily Lin, Jeremiah Morris, George Brent Shorter, Erin Elizabeth Sobotta, Shannon Marlece Vittur, all from Cave Spring; Rachel A. Each student is eligible for one of 100 $1,000 scholarships and each teacher is eligible to compete for one of the 100 $2,500 cash awards presented annually. All will receive certificates.
\ MELISSA SCHAUER KILLEN, daughter of Dana and Mary Ann Schauer of Roanoke, recently graduated from Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville.
Killen, who received a bachelor of science in psychology, was a member and officer of Psi Chi.
\ JENNIFER L. REYNOLDS, daughter of Vincent and Robin Reynolds of Vinton, was named to the spring dean's list at Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C.
\ HARRY L. MESSIMER II, son of Kathleen Messimer of Roanoke and Harry Messimer of Salem, recently received a master of arts degree from Columbia International University in Columbia, S.C.
Messimer majored in teaching English as a second language and intercultural studies.
\ YVONNE M. BELANGER, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Belanger of Roanoke, recently received a bachelor of arts degree from St. John's College in Annapolis, Md.
\ SARAH LOVELACE DILLON of Roanoke recently graduated magna cum laude in education for the deaf and hard of hearing from Barton College in Wilson, N.C.
She also was on the dean's list.
