\ SEAMAN RECRUIT MATTHEW B. MITCHELL, son of Lorraine C. Roberts of 4745 Carvins Cove Road, Salem, recently completed basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill.

\ STAFF SGT. LONNIE GROSS of Roanoke has received the Navy achievement medal. He was recognized for superior performance while serving with Station Operations and Engineering Station at Marine Corps Air Station in Cherry Point, N.C.
\ SEAMAN RECRUIT MELISSA C. RICHARDSON, daughter of Connie K. Dodd of 3340 Circle Brook Drive, recently finished Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Orlando, Fla.
Richardson is a 1992 graduate of Northside High School.
\ CHIEF WARRANT OFFICER ROBERT C. BIRCH recently received the Navy achievement medal while assigned at the Marine Corps Air Station, Beaufort, N.C.
\ JAMES P. GEIB, son of Charles T. Geib of Roanoke, has been promoted in the Air Force to the rank of major. He is a 1978 graduate of Salem High School.
\ AIRMAN CHIEF PETTY OFFICER WAYNE G. MIESEN and COAST GUARD PETTY OFFICER MICHAEL THOMPSON received the Special Operations Service ribbon for duty during Operation Desert Storm.
Miesen was assigned to a Coast Guard port security unit at Camp Blanding, Fla., and Thompson was assigned to the Marine Safety Offices at Wilmington, N.C., and Hampton Roads. Both are members of the Smith Mountain Lake Coast Guard Detachment.
\ AIRMAN MICHELLE L. PAIGE, daughter of Nancy P. Brown of Roanoke, has graduated from Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. She is a 1993 graduate of William Fleming High School.
\ ADRIANNE V. SPEIGEL, daughter of Pam and David S. Spagel of Salem, has graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.
Speigel is a 1990 graduate of Salem High School.
