FARMERS HOPE FOR WETTER DAYS

A wet start to 1994 allowed Virginia farmers to plant their crops this spring in moist soil. But rainfall has dropped off since then, and soybean, corn and alfalfa crops are drying up.

"We're not calling it a drought - we're nowhere close - but we are very dry in some areas," said Bob Bass, state statistician for the Virginia Agricultural Statistics Service.
